Columbia State Community College Fall 2017 (students & advice)

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

I applied to Columbia State's RN program today!! I am hoping to get in and to attend the Franklin, Tn campus! I have completed all of the prerequisites and non-nursing classes. I technically could attend a BSN program if it wasn't for my GPA, 2.81. I am wanting to finish the 4 classes for I need for a BSN program so I can apply for a bridge program in the last months of the program. I am going to go to school all summer and if I have to take statistics during the Fall semester. I am super nervous!! I have their point system in front of me and I only have 5 points (bummer). The lady said they have to be super choosy with their program which added to my nervousness. Anyone else apply to the program? Anyone have any advice?

Thanks that helps alot. I guess I got 5 or 6 depending on if that the min ACT req. to get in which is a 19. Not good chances:no:

VLeysath - If you don't get in, I would recommend doing some ACT prep. I took the ACT for the 1st time this past December...got a 19...not bad for never taking it and graduating in 99. I purchased the study prep courses through ACT and brought my score up to a 21 right before applications were due at CSCC. If I do not get into a program at NSCC or CSCC for this fall, I'll retake the ACT and reapply for the Spring at CSCC. I did get accepted into the BSN program at Aquinas but really do not want to pay the $22K/year to go.

Did you get an email from Aquinas about their programs? I applied to them and received an email from them stating they are focusing on their mission of education. They are having financial problems and are focusing on creating teachers. I agree with what you are saying about what to do if someone doesn't get in. I only have a 19 on my ACT and its 6 years old. If i do not get in I am going to retake my ACT this summer after I complete College Algebra. GREAT Advice!

KPeeke, I got the email too and saw it in the news as well. I'm just glad it wasn't the only place I applied. I feel bad for the students currently enrolled there.

This is from the paper they gave me when I applied.

"Selection Process:

GPA must be 2.5 or better to be considered for a spot in the program.

A maximum total of 8 points in assigned to each applicant as follows:

ACT:

19 = 1 point

20-21 = 2 points

22-23 = 3 points

24+ = 4 points

A&P I:

1st Try A = 4 points

2nd try A, 1st try B = 3 points

2nd try B = 2 points

C = 1 point

1 point is also given for a prior Bachelor's degree (again, with maximum allowable points being 8)"

so if the top 65 (or however many they take) all have 8 points, how do they "break the tie"? Or does that just never happen?

PS that reminds me, does anyone know how many they take?

I feel bad for the students also! The school worked so hard to get their BSN program and officially had it for only a year? I hope those students can find another school to attend. It costs so much money and a lot of school I notice wont take transfer nursing classes. Smh :/

I am not sure about "tie breaks" but I found this in the program's FAQ's

How many students are accepted into the nursing program each semester? A: The average class size has been 64 students per semester, with 32 students attending each campus, Columbia and Franklin.

If there were more than 64 people who have 8s, I would assume they would base any ties off of GPA. When I spoke with the lady at the Columbia Campus, she said that if they go into the 5 category, they generally use GPA as a deciding factor.

Do we know if they send out emails or actual letters?

According to past post, most seem to suggest they send letters in the mail. It would be nice if emails went out though.

I saw that they mail out physical letters and we use those to accept our position in the program. They have to be sent back by the time listed on the letter. We should be getting them this weekend or this week based on past posts!
