Columbia ETP 2010

Published

Hey Y'all!

I'm getting ready to apply to the Columbia's ETP for 2010. I was just wondering who else was applying and what you were doing to make your application stronger! Also where else are you applying and what do your stats look like (GPA, GRE, experience, etc) ? I'm getting nervous as I start the whole application process and just thought I'd turn to the forums for some support and guidance!

I'm looking forward to sharing the journey with y'all! Hope to hear from you soon! :)

Estimated cost of attendance for the 1 st year is 100K including everything (60 credits, health insurance, room, board, books, transportation, etc...). After that, most tracks have about 40 credits left at $1200-$1400 per credit (just tuition). However, they strongly urged us to work full/part time during the MS portion, not only for the experience, but also because most hospitals pay for a lot of tuition and your pay would cover living expenses.

I asked the on-campus housing office what the odds were of getting into the dorms and they said that they're expecting that there will be 30 vacancies and about 90 applications. So most likely you'll have to find something off campus. The off-campus housing speaker suggested that we live in the Inwood or Washington Heights Neighborhoods because they are safe (for NYC standards) and more affordable.

If your FAFSA Estimated Family Contribution is less than 100K, you can expect to get the School of Nursing scholarship for 34K that's broken up, 22K for the first year, 12K for the next.

The current students that I spoke with (in the FNP, track) really seemed to love the program and the school.

thanks for the quick update.

I live around the bay area in California... how do i proceed to find off campus housing? craigslist? i wish there's a student housing listing. i'll feel safer to look for off campus housing there....

Also, if anyone can help me with this: i was on the columbia webpage, http://cait.cumc.columbia.edu:88/dept/nursing/admissions/index.html# and i saw a tab on the left that said "Accepted Applicants" so i went under there and clicked on ETP students. But i can't log in with my admissions username and password. is there a special code for it? i thought maybe there's be some centralized system of what we have turned in and what we haven't turned in yet.

Iowayu,

I'm not sure about the log in (I would check with Columbia staff about that), but I'm pretty sure that there is a housing forum for Columbia students (might be based off of the main campus site). I read the allnurses.com thread from last years class and remember something about that... or it may have been on their facebook (can't keep all my internet stalking straight!) I know there is a way to sublet other medical student housing just for the summer (if you don't get Bard hall for the summer/whole year), which could be a good option so you have more time to look for places in person.

The housing lady at admitted students day really advised against craigslist. She actually sort of scared me about that! I guess NYC is one city where a lot of scams happen on Craigslist (pictures posted from different apartments, hidden brokers fees, etc), which really sucks, because I've used it in the past for housing/roommates and its worked out.

hrm. interesting. then i guess i'll just turn in my housing application, and hope i'll win the lottery. I assume Bard Hall is the closest building to the School of Nursing.

I was looking at the rates for student housing, and they're averaging $700/month... is it any cheaper off campus?

I recommend to look off campus, since the lottery chances are pretty slim. I've heard that west-coast applicants have priority though. Maybe this sounds high maintainence but I've heard that the rooms are really small, only a few have their own sinks. I think living in the dorms during undergrad was enough for me :)

As for the login thing, I would think they need to send us an ID/password to be able to do that. Would this be the same "Columbia Uni" identification that is asked of us in the Pre-Registration medical history forms? I'm assuming its a kind of student ID number...

The other thing I'd point out is the housing office said, at accepted students day, you can call and or email them about housing in the neighborhood. I guess they keep a list of reputable landlords. They seemed really friendly and helpful, worth a shot!

I spoke to a friend who went there a few years ago and moved from the Bay Area. She got in the dorms and said she lived there for the summer and then moved out. She described them as pretty dismal, not sure I want to do a whole year there but if I get in I may start out there so I can look while I am there for something off-campus. I think you may have to pay to break the contract though, guess I'll figure out that part if I actually get campus housing. Just sounds like a nice way to not have to figure out how to search for an apartment from California. I remember her place once she moved out, it was close to the school and not a bad place at all. Maybe because we start before the fall programs there is some possibility to just do the summer months in the dorms?

I spoke with the on-campus housing office and they said that there is a summer contract that goes until August 6th, and then you have to sign a new one for Aug-May if you're wanting to stay.

Is anyone else planning on doing student housing (if accepted) just for summer and looking for places while there? I'm from California as well, and do not have time to get to NYC to look for places before June. Also, I think it might be good to just live as close to campus in the summer during "bootcamp" and before we end up in clinicals around the city. I'm hoping there may be some people with the same mind frame that would want to room together starting in August.

cstark,

That's actually my plan too. I want to live in the dorms during the summer and then live off-campus in the fall. I'm from California too, and it just feels too hectic to find a place to live in NYC so fast especially since I don't know the area at all. I also don't have time to fly back to NY to search. I am reallly worried about getting into the dorms though. But I will definitely be looking for roomates for the fall!

I am also thinking of the dorms for the summer...I'd like to get a feel for the area and schedule before deciding where I want to live and signing a lease. If not the dorms for the summer, I will look to sublet. I figure the closer I am to campus the better, even if it means enduring dorm life once again! After all, we'll be so busy it's really just a place to sleep. Glad to hear other people have the same thoughts as myself, since I will most likely be looking for roommates for the fall and beyond!

Cool. I'm glad other people are in the same boat. Well, I guess we can see what happens with campus housing and then freak out about sublets if we don't get it.

Oh, I also emailed them about scrubs, since I'm 5'10" I asked if there are inseam choices at all (since the size chart said for average ladies between 5'3" and 5'7". I would be a small or maybe medium by the rest of their suggestions. He didn't say there are any inseam variations and recommended the Medium. Don't know if anyone else is in this situation, but I think we may look really awesome in our high water scrubs this summer.
