Columbia ETP 2010

Published

Hey Y'all!

I'm getting ready to apply to the Columbia's ETP for 2010. I was just wondering who else was applying and what you were doing to make your application stronger! Also where else are you applying and what do your stats look like (GPA, GRE, experience, etc) ? I'm getting nervous as I start the whole application process and just thought I'd turn to the forums for some support and guidance!

I'm looking forward to sharing the journey with y'all! Hope to hear from you soon! :)

I applied for the FNP specialty. I'm not exactly sure what area fits me best, but I am interested in human development across the lifespan, which is why I chose FNP. I'm now nervous about my decision though since it seems to be the most popular specialty...hope it doesn't hurt my chances of getting in.

I applied for the Women's Health NP speciality. I am getting really anxious and just want to know either way. I know I am not alone here but I am realllllly hoping for tomorrow. Is anyone applying to Georgetown's program?

I applied to the Nurse Anesthesia program.

I applied to the FNP track. Did anyone read the forum for ETP applicants last year? There were a lot of negative comments about Columbia's program. I really want to go to Columbia but nervous about what some past students have said...

I think I have actually read through every single post on this website regarding Columbia's program, even the ones that date back to 2005. (yes, I know that is a little OCD lol). I think there are alot of good points made by current/previous students, but really there is no one right opinion/answer for anyone, and it's an experience that differs with each individual. I did read a post, which I think is true -- People are more likely to speak out loud about anything in general, when they are dissatisfied with it, but I do think it was good we got to have insight of the good and bad.

So I caved earlier and called as I was about to post what I heard, it looked like a lot of you beat me to it. Heard the same thing, they are aiming for tomorrow but Monday will be the latest. I can't believe we will have to go through the weekend with all this anxiety.

I applied to FNP, it is a very popular track. I am a firm believer that where ever I'll end will be the best place for me. Keeping my fingers crossed for all of us.

Specializes in future FNP!.

I applied to FNP as well. I'm with you Beth, what will be, will be, and I'll make the best of it.

I have read the negative comments on the other posts. KHNurse2B, I think I read that far back as well, LOL. We are quite a neurotic group. I agree, it is such an individual choice for everyone and an individual experience. You just have to weigh the pros and cons and see what is best for you. I take those comments with a grain of salt.

At this point, I can't even stop to think about it. If I don't get in, then nothing to worry about LOL

KHNurse, I definitely agree that people are more likely to speak up when they are or were dissatisfied with their experience. I guess I am so nervous to hear if I got in that I can't stop thinking about it! LOL. This is driving me crazy! But I think it is good that some of us have read those comments to educate ourselves and get a preview on some of the past experiences of students. Good luck, we should know soon!

Beth and Rach, I have to agree we are a neurotic bunch! haha. I think I am posting so much today, because I have all this unresolved anxious energy about the suspense of it all, and I need to release it somewhere - be it this forum. haha.

I read the same negative posts. Even a woman in my office encouraged me not to apply, since her daughter hated the ETP program. When I told her last week that I had applied, she asked why after what she'd told me. I said I need to change my career and Columbia's timing is perfect for me. When I asked why her daughter hated it so much, she replied, "They make them do all the $h!t work!" I asked if she meant cleaning people, and she said yes, and that all her daughter's friends complained about that and hated the program for that very reason. I politely pointed out that that's part of patient care and EVERY nursing program. Apparently, none of them realized that and thought they'd be above that at Columbia. That was the only negative feedback she could give me. So, yes, I think it's all perpective.

The funny thing is, on the PA forums, so many students complained about Drexel's ACE program, saying how horrible it was, so I asked a friend from high school if her experience there was awful. She hadn't heard about the postings, so she read them and thought they were ridiculous. As she said, every accelerated program is very, very tough, so there are days that you hate it, but in the end, they produce really good nurses. They don't equip with you everything you need to know, but they provide a great basis for what you will learn.

Anyway, don't worry too much about the negativity. It is what you make of it. Best wishes all!!!!

Oh, and I'm applying for the PNP. I shadowed a PNP and loved it! I also thought about specializing in oncology or even HIV/AIDS patients. There are so many options, which is what I love!

To the person who was worried about the number of students applying for FNP, I believe they don't really take that into consideration, since they realize that people's interests shift once they do clinicals. The only ones that have set numbers are anesthesia and midwifery, but even those students may be accepted to the general program if they don't get into their choice of specialty. That's what Naveed told me when I met with him.

To everyone else who's feeling as anxious:

Just called and Naveed said that they were looking to send out emails by batches and are hoping to send the biggest batch of responses out by tomorrow, but he also said that if things have to be delayed till Monday, they'll definitely send out an email to let us know that, as well.

(Oh, man....here's to hoping that we'll know by tomorrow!!!)
