Columbia ETP Program 2012 entry

Published

Hi,

I plan on applying for the anesthesia program at Columbia and I wanted to know how the background of those that have been accepted look like to see if I'm even competitive enough apply.

Thanks!

Hi ashted88 -

I really want to apply to Columbia but I am very concerned about the costs. Do you know about how much the three years are expected to cost (including housing?). Maybe a ballpark figure? Do most people work as RNs during the masters portion?

some good questions too myelin!

Hey!

I recently went to an information session and they provided a cost outline. Tuition for the first year is approximately $ 75,000. They average that a student living on a average/low living budget with need $ 34,000 for rent/food/extra. So, with that, they say anywhere from $90,000- 103,000 the first year. The second year tuition is $ 54,000, then you would also need to include outside expenses. But, you are able to work the second year, so that can help out with possibly not needing to take out living/food loans the second year. They also provide about 90 % of students with a total grant of $ 25,000 for the program, so that helps a little. Overall, I think you can plan tuition/expenses all together to run about $ 120,000-150,000, depending on your individual needs. Hope this helps!

Interesting... but isn't it usually 3 years total, not 2? Isn't the master's portion typically 2 years (plus the RN year)? Or does it depend on your specialty?

eta: Yikes, it looks like it depends on specialty. I want to do psych and it looks like that takes almost an entire year longer than FNP(!). So that's like an extra 50k in tuition? I know psych NPs are typically well paid compared to other specialties, but still. Argh.

Yea, the time frames do vary, but it is based off how many units your program is and not the time frame. I did hear that the psych mental health was a longer time frame, but not more units. The head of the program likes to have students work full-time during the program, therefore they require less of a work load each semester...Hope this info helps!

ooh. So they like having you working full time? That could make it a lot, lot more feasible. Thanks for the info!

This might be a stupid question, but do you need to declare your intended specialization when you apply? I would love to do nurse anesthetist, but I am in no way qualified enough. My second choice is psych.

chiasmus100 - yes, you do need to specify your specialty when you apply, and your application should be highly tailored to your chosen specialty. If anesthesia is what you really want to do, you might want to wait another year before applying to get the right experience under your belt. There are lots of threads on AN about what you should do to prepare for a CRNA program. Good luck!

Hi all,

I'm joining this thread again this year, I was waitlisted last yr and am hopeful about my chances of entering the ETP/Midwifery program this year... Sigh. The watchful waiting aspect of the whole application process is killer.

Blessings to all,

Kerry

Congrats Kerry on reapplying!!! That's a huge step in itself. Did they give you any pointers this time around to improve your application?

Not directly but last yr when I applied I was only 1/2 way through my undergrad. I finished it in 2 yrs and the transcripts that were sent only had about half my grades on it. I also have sat for the IBCLC's since then so I think/hope all this will add to them having a better pic of me as a student. Finally my prerequisites were incomplete at decision time, I had micro outstanding. God willing the fact that all that is complete will help me have better luck this yr...

I actually heard early to mid December for early decision....

I heard that early application notifications are expected to go out in late December/early January...long wait ahead...
