Hi,
I plan on applying for the anesthesia program at Columbia and I wanted to know how the background of those that have been accepted look like to see if I'm even competitive enough apply.
Thanks!
Sure, last yrs was about the same as this yrs, except I've completed the program, the GPA is almost identical so I'll give you this yrs (I hope that's okay). My GPA was 3.58, my BS was in maternal/child health with a concentration in lactation consulting which prepared me to take the IBCLC's. I spent a yr doing missions work in TX and Mexico as a doula in a freestanding birth center last year, and a few weeks in 2008 doing almost the same thing at a different part of the border. I speak fluent Spanish and lived in Spain for a time. I also volunteer extensively with the homeless and youth. I've been trained through CAPPA & DONA as a doula, work in NYC with a religious order that concentrates on helping pregnant women in the capacity of doula, and I guess I also have worked in the field as a postpartum doula for 6 or so yrs. I'm not sure if that’s what you're looking for, I'm retaking the GRE's this week but last time (totally unprepared) I scored a 1060 ish (I think). On the prerequisites I had all A's except for a B+ in bio. I think that’s everything but if I forgot something let me know and I'll fill you in.
I don't have any experience except a psych major in college, volunteer at a nursing home and I am applying to the psych track. I might not apply and just stick with ABSN programs.
I don't think you should throw in the towel.... Psych is considerably less competitive than midwifery, and any volunteer work looks great, play it up. I hope you don't take the less competitive thing wrong, its still an honor to be selected but almost half of the applications for ETP are for midwifery I'm pretty sure.
Yeah, both you need to state your intent for prior to applying, the others are slightly more flexible! DonThere are more preceptors too for psych I think. 't discourage, I think that's where things went wrong last year. Have hope and I'll see you in May when classes begin! Be a light in the darkness. BTW, I cannot tell you how much respect I have for psych, I personally cannot think of a more challenging job with fewer rewards. It takes a saint to even contemplate such a profession.
