Columbia ETP Program 2012 entry

Published

Hi,

I plan on applying for the anesthesia program at Columbia and I wanted to know how the background of those that have been accepted look like to see if I'm even competitive enough apply.

Thanks!

Hi everyone,

I applied to the 2011 ETP and wasn't accepted, which ended up being a blessing in disguise due to family issues that arose in the winter. Regardless, it was a painful blow to my ego...and a great lesson in humility. I'm reapplying for the 2012 ETP. I am retaking some college classes from 15 years ago in the hope that it will improve my application.

I did well on my GRE test, I have a B.A. and an M.A. from Ivy League schools, and I've been teaching in a NYC private high school for 13 years. I am going to apply ED for ANP with an Oncology concentration. I will apply to Yale as well, although Columbia is my first choice since I already live in the Metro area.

Best of luck to everyone! As the summer and fall progress, José (understandably) gets busier and busier. Any interactions you need to have with him are best taken care of ASAP if you hope for a speedy response.

Hi guys. I will likely be applying to Columbia for 2012 entry as well. Does anyone have any information about applying early decision? Is it binding? When can you expect to hear back? I'm trying to get more info and I can't really see anything on the site. I'm probably just not looking in the right place.

I forgot the exact date but when you open the application, it will tell you when the Early Decision is (Middle of Oct or November???). I believe it is binding once you submit your app and it is processed.

Yes, I too also believe it is binding. From my understanding with early decision is you can only have 1 early decision application and if you are admitted to the program you have to immediately withdraw all other applications.

Hi everyone, I met with admissions the other day and they said the early decision application is not binding. You simply get their decision and an estimate of your financial aid package earlier--before the calendar year is up. I think they introduced it just to make planning easier on both parties.

Wow how interesting. Does anyone know if all of the other early decision schools (like Johns Hopkins) is non-binding as well? I can call on Monday morning to find out, if not. Thanks!

That's really cool info! Thank you :)

Were you able to get in touch with other admissions and hear anything about their early decision policies?

Hi all,

I called Johns Hopkins, and they said it is binding in the sense that you are supposed to withdraw your application from all other schools. But, you don't HAVE to go to their school. There is an option on their application to select the early decision option. I copied/pasted what it says (if you select the box):

By checking this checkbox, I am indicating that The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing is my first choice and I wish to apply under the Early Decision Plan. I understand that I will be notified of the decision by December 15 if my application is completed by November 1. If I am accepted, I agree to submit a $500 non-refundable deposit at the time and to withdraw any applications I have filed with other colleges immediately.

Interesting... and Columbia has no such restrictive wording?

Correct..I also called Columbia to confirm, and they said they're still trying to work the process out, but for now it is just if you turn it in earlier, you get considered earlier.

That's so interesting! I wonder if they limit how many they offer an early admission to...?

Wow...I had NO idea about it being non-binding. That's really great news. Thank you for that update!
