Columbia ETP Program 2012 entry

Published

Hi,

I plan on applying for the anesthesia program at Columbia and I wanted to know how the background of those that have been accepted look like to see if I'm even competitive enough apply.

Thanks!

@eyeb4e i too am an old fart! 30 years old, male. when i look at the facebook page i see alot of people seemingly straight out of undergrad and i worry a little that i'd be sort of a "black sheep" - not only due to age but due to gender. but i'm sure that everyone will bond and form close relationships (regardless of age/sex) after a few really intense semesters.

jose sent a clarification about the uniform order forms but it seems like they have a preferred supplier and we are locked into buying from them...unless any one has heard differently..

@bringinit247

i'm 25 (almost 26 by the time we start), so not straight out of undergrad :) female though. but my closest friends through out undergrad were older than me. i think its going to awesome and everyone will bond pretty quickly!

Hi bringinit247,

I am female but I am 27, nearly 28, and have been out of school and working for a number of years. I suspect that we will all bond and our different backgrounds/experiences will be good for all of us.

For those of you who were interested in getting margaritas after Visiting Day- there's another invite out there to head to a bar called Coogan's at 4pm. Just wanted to let you all know!

hey everyone, i think on the ETP Facebook page, a current student said scrubs are for clinical days only. not lectures and that. which i hope is true. also, i'm 27 as well. and married. and have a kid. talk about black sheep! so no worries. we'll all find common ground as stressed out nursing students. i think i might skip drinks after the visiting day only because i am not looking for a roommate, and it seems like that is the main thrust of the evening. i'd much appreciate to be notified of any good insider information anyone gains by going though, if any of you end up heading over there. see you all on friday!

@nurseywannabe

having a child does not make you black a sleep! i'm amazed and impressed you are taking on such a time intensive program and pursuing a new career. obviously great for you and your child. congrats! i also think you should come for drinks on visiting day. a lot of current students will be there and while roommates will definitely be a topic, i think there will be much more to discuss as well!

does anyone know how possible it is to take a year of after the bns portion, work in an icu and then try to re-enroll in anesthesia? the more i hear about anesthesia the more i wish i pursued it. anyways thoughts are appreciated!

thanks futurewh! i definitely feel like i'll be the old mom in class haha, but i am so excited to be starting out on this new phase in life! i'll see you there on friday... haha how will we all know each other? i fully expect to see your names AND your allnurses handles on your name tags! (*secretly hoping there are NOT name tags.*)

Dear New Class of ETP,

Congrats! I am looking forward to joining the program in May 2012.

I am messaging because I won't be able to attend Visiting Day in early March.

Let me know if you plan on going and are willing to talk with me about your experience afterward!

Hi all!

Could someone supply a link to the current ETP Facebook page? I only see one for 2011...

Thanks!

How easy/difficult is it to change specialties?

Ah great, thank you!

I have been reading this thread for a few days now, and feel like I should stop lurking and post something! ;) I am 32, entering the midwifery specialty, and excited to be around the young energy of beginning this program. Also, @eyeb4e, I am from CA too! I am sure plenty of us will bond over school and NY, and age will be a non-issue. I am looking forward to meeting everyone at Visiting Day!
