Columbia ETP Program 2012 entry

Published

Hi,

I plan on applying for the anesthesia program at Columbia and I wanted to know how the background of those that have been accepted look like to see if I'm even competitive enough apply.

Thanks!

**** emailed me today, saying that he's (still) out of the office, but that my app, which he wasn't able to update yet, will be updated soon. I'm sure they're just behind schedule, this being the first time they've had this ED option.

Just got an e-mail today, saying that my transcripts should be added to my app tomorrow. Hopefully, they'll be updating the rest of yours as well!

I e-mailed them as well. I wonder why I didn't get an e-mail back? Does that mean they don't have it?

It took almost 2 weeks for me to get a reply to my e-mail, so perhaps there's just a backlog.

This wait is going to be truly torturous. I wish they could give us a definite date for the admissions decisions. So frustrating!

I know! I was traveling throughout October so I was really distracted, but now I'm back and thinking way too much about this.

In my mind, I've decided that they'll let us know on December 31 - 7 more weeks to wait. That way if they let us know sooner, it'll just be good luck. ;)

Has anyone else applied to NYU's ABSN Program for Sprig 2012? I just found out I was accepted and it looks like I'm going to have to withdraw my app to Columbia. It would be nice to know if I got in and could choose between the two but I guess I should be grateful I got into a program!

I didn't apply to NYU so I can't offer you any advice on what to do, but I just want to say Congratulations!! May this board soon be filled with more good news like yours!

Hello,

I just want to say that all your posts are really inspiring! I'm still in undergrad but I am definitely aspiring to apply and go to Columbia. For those of you that took time off, when did you ask for your letters of rec? I'm thinking of asking before Spring Qtr of my senior year starts (UCLA student). I'm planning on taking 1-2 years off in order to 1) study for the GRE 2) volunteer, gain more experience 3) take those damn pre-req's and possibly retake chemistry -___- 4) work and try to save some money before I'm hit with those loans.

So you're planning on asking for letters of req your senior year of college and then taking 1-2 years off (correct me if I'm wrong)? That might look odd to the admissions committee. You may want your letters to be relatively recent. Can you try and stay in touch with these individuals over the next couple of years so that they can write them for you at least the same year you're planning on applying? I took 2 years off and asked for my letters of req about 4-6 weeks before the application was due.

I agree with myelin - if you're going to take a few years to do other things before applying, just be sure to keep up relationships with people who could be recommenders for you. It doesn't have to be a big deal; before I knew that I even wanted to apply to these nursing programs I made a point of writing to a couple key professors and former employers every year, just to say hi and let them know what I was up to.

When I decided to apply, I visited each recommender personally so we could catch up face to face. I asked for recommendations a couple months before they were due.

Thanks myelin and LookingAhead –

My friend had recommended that I ask at the end of my senior year and then let them know that I needed them to re-date and send them. But you two make more sense.
