Hi,
I plan on applying for the anesthesia program at Columbia and I wanted to know how the background of those that have been accepted look like to see if I'm even competitive enough apply.
Thanks!
Hello,
I just want to say that all your posts are really inspiring! I'm still in undergrad but I am definitely aspiring to apply and go to Columbia. For those of you that took time off, when did you ask for your letters of rec? I'm thinking of asking before Spring Qtr of my senior year starts (UCLA student). I'm planning on taking 1-2 years off in order to 1) study for the GRE 2) volunteer, gain more experience 3) take those damn pre-req's and possibly retake chemistry -___- 4) work and try to save some money before I'm hit with those loans.
So you're planning on asking for letters of req your senior year of college and then taking 1-2 years off (correct me if I'm wrong)? That might look odd to the admissions committee. You may want your letters to be relatively recent. Can you try and stay in touch with these individuals over the next couple of years so that they can write them for you at least the same year you're planning on applying? I took 2 years off and asked for my letters of req about 4-6 weeks before the application was due.
I agree with myelin - if you're going to take a few years to do other things before applying, just be sure to keep up relationships with people who could be recommenders for you. It doesn't have to be a big deal; before I knew that I even wanted to apply to these nursing programs I made a point of writing to a couple key professors and former employers every year, just to say hi and let them know what I was up to.
When I decided to apply, I visited each recommender personally so we could catch up face to face. I asked for recommendations a couple months before they were due.

**** emailed me today, saying that he's (still) out of the office, but that my app, which he wasn't able to update yet, will be updated soon. I'm sure they're just behind schedule, this being the first time they've had this ED option.
