Columbia BSN/MSN ETP 2014

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

I was surprised that there didn't seem to be a thread for this year's applicants to Columbia's ETP program. So I thought I would start one. The information session was today, but I wasn't able to go. :( I was hoping someone else went and would be able to post any admission statistics or tips for the personal statement they gave.

Thanks mecks625! So helpful and encouraging--I will most likely do the same as you, and try to file my FAFSA this weekend. I actually did the FAFSA back in Nov, but I was told to wait to file because of 2013 taxes and school year. I guess I am glad I waited because I assumed all the programs I was applying to were graduate, and didn't even realize then that many consider the 1st year undergrad...which is a shame, because there is a lot less $$$ granted for a 2nd bachelors than for grad school....

I got this email from Financial Aid pertaining to fafsa application...

"...Although we are suggesting new incoming students to have it

in by 2/15/14, we will still send you a package even if it is after 2/15/14.

I have already filed mine, but I had a question and this was part of the response. The staff is fantastic. They are so encouraging and laid-back.

Good luck!!

Do any of you live in the city already? If I end up at Columbia, I'm going to be moving from Portland, OR. Any good ideas for finding a place for my husband and I? How much is it going to cost?!

Hey Lcrown

Have you looked at campus housing options? Off campus could range from 800-3000+ (average 1500). Depends on what kind of place you're willing to spend on. Remember it's all about location. Look for places near train stations if you plan on using public transportation. I plan to look for a place in washington heights, west harlem, or inwood area. There's plenty of sites online but always visit the apartment before signing anything. (Pictures don't always match up) good luck!

Time is slowly passing by.. hopefully we will all be hearing good news in less than two weeks! :) I've started having dreams about getting accepted/rejected, I have my fingers crossed!

Thanks sweet03nesy! I have looked at on campus but especially for couples I think it's hard to get placed there. I noticed that the school has a real estate agent that helps their students and faculty, so when the time comes I'll probably give them a call. Washington Heights sounds like a fun area and seems to have the cheapest rents/biggest spaces. Your info is very helpful!

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to introduce myself... I actually was accepted to the ETP program last year ( for midwifery) but deferred a year to be with my husband who is studying abroad this year. I will be starting this May, hopefully with many of you!

Regarding the FAFSA, I haven't done it yet but I remember from last year that I submitted it as fifth year undergrad and then changed it for the other schools. You still should get your taxes done asap though so it's as accurate as possible and you can get an accurate aid package. U remember last year they only send the aid packages out a couple days before we had to put down our deposits.

@Lcrown, New York is very expensive. The area right around Columbia is a little sketchy, although it's not as bad as it used to be. Personally I prefer to live above 180th St or below 125th. Washington Heights is cheaper, Upper West Side is more convenient to the rest of the city. In my last apartment we paid 2000/month for a 1 bedroom around 125th and Amsterdam (it was 1800 when we moved in but jumped when we renewed the lease). In Washington Heights you can probably get a 1 bedroom for 1500 or a 2 br for under 2000. Food is also really expensive in the city, just so you know.

Good luck to everyone waiting to hear back!!

Thanks bocaburger! I was wondering about the safety of the neighborhood and how accessible it was. I applied for midwifery as well! Should be hearing back soon...

I live in lower Westchester NY now which is a pretty easy commute already, but I'm considering a move to Riverdale (I did my undergrad at Manhattan College in Riverdale) if I get into Columbia. the area is very close to the 242nd stop on 1 train, which is only a few stops from Columbia - maybe a 10-15 min commute. I would say that its nicer and safer than Washington Heights and has a little bit more of a residential feel. Hope this helps!

Hey, everyone!! Sorry I haven't posted to this thread in a while, but CUSON has been keeping us very busy!!! If you have any specific questions about the program, etc. please PM me and I will try to respond quickly.

I can tell you this much: the admissions committee is still hard at work!! I overheard that they are still reading essays just yesterday. Keep your fingers crossed, try to relax and know that the end is in sight. Best wishes to all of you.

ARickli - are you in he masters portion of the program yet? I was wondering how many days a week you have to go to class during the masters portion? I had heard it's less so nurses can work if they need.

Hi guys! the ETP student blog is now live. We will try and put a new post up every week! We are also interviewing your future professors so you guys can feel a little bit more comfortable about ETP!
