lifeismuzik, can you talk more about how and where to volunteer? I seem to remember learning about a free clinic in Washington Heights where a lot of nursing students volunteer... is that correct? What types of opportunities are there for volunteering before you have RN certification? Thanks!

cindynmickey, I spoke to the Financial Aid department about the Robert Wood Johnson scholarship. The date on the website is from last year and they have not worked out the details for this year's scholarship yet (I think Columbia has to negotiate with RWJF or something). They said after they send out acceptances they will also send out info about all available scholarships.

Hey everyone, Just wanted to introduce myself... I actually was accepted to the ETP program last year ( for midwifery) but deferred a year to be with my husband who is studying abroad this year. I will be starting this May, hopefully with many of you! Regarding the FAFSA, I haven't done it yet but I remember from last year that I submitted it as fifth year undergrad and then changed it for the other schools. You still should get your taxes done asap though so it's as accurate as possible and you can get an accurate aid package. U remember last year they only send the aid packages out a couple days before we had to put down our deposits. @Lcrown, New York is very expensive. The area right around Columbia is a little sketchy, although it's not as bad as it used to be. Personally I prefer to live above 180th St or below 125th. Washington Heights is cheaper, Upper West Side is more convenient to the rest of the city. In my last apartment we paid 2000/month for a 1 bedroom around 125th and Amsterdam (it was 1800 when we moved in but jumped when we renewed the lease). In Washington Heights you can probably get a 1 bedroom for 1500 or a 2 br for under 2000. Food is also really expensive in the city, just so you know. Good luck to everyone waiting to hear back!!

Does anyone know when the 2014 application will be posted (and when it's due)? People who have been accepted to this scholarship, do you have any tips? What does the application entail? THANKS!

I heard recently that the ACNP is pushing to move from MSN programs to DNP programs only. Some schools, I was told, are planning to eliminate their MSN programs within the next year or two. Is this true? Will DNP be the only option within a few years? Does anyone have more information about this? I was planning to apply for an MSN program within the next 1-3 years so this could have a huge impact on my decision. Any info would be much appreciated! Thanks :-)

It's so good to hear from someone who was in the program! What did you think of it? If you don't mind me asking, why didn't you finish the MSN? I am hoping to do the Women's Health NP and Family & Population Health MPH. I would do both full-time. Do you have any idea how long that would take? Also, it seems that neither admissions office really knows how the joint program works. Once you start, is there support? Do they have a good advising system or some sort of point person you can go to with questions? Thank you!!!

I am planning to apply to the MSN/MPH joint degree program about Columbia. However, the admissions departments really only know about their own individual programs, and I cannot get in touch with anyone who knows specifically about the joint program. The admissions offices are not allowed to give me the names of current or past students who did the program. If you have any information or know anyone who has done this, PLEASE help me out!! The most important question I have is about timing. I need to know how long it will take to complete both degrees. According to the website and all the brochures I have seen, the joint program requires 75 credits (whereas each individual program would have been 45 credits) and can be done in 2 years. However, the nursing admissions department told me that their requirements are not diminished by doing the joint program and that it will require a year and a half just to complete the nursing portion. I am getting two different stories and I REALLY need a straight answer so I can figure out when to apply. Any help you have would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!

I still need to take two nursing pre-requisites, Microbiology and Anatomy&Physiology. I work full time and will be taking the courses online. I only have time to do one at a time, so I will be taking one in the spring and one in the summer. Do you have any recommendations about which to take first? Thanks!
