College Level School Nurse?

Published

Hello, everyone--

I have a question that I could use some feedback on. I have a friend that is overseeing a small private college. They know I'm an RN and they are curious to what all services an RN would be able to provide if they were to hire one. Any ideas of what all I could present as far as what an RN could do in a college setting? It wouldn't be a clinic with an NP or doctor. It would just be the RN on staff... Thank you in advance for any suggestions as it's greatly appreciated!

Interesting. I assume it may be similar to the services a high school nurse can provide. Can I assume there is no connected doctor off-site that can sign anything if needed?

I'm only aware of RNs working in a clinic - student health services, along with doctors and NPs. Or perhaps an RN contracted by a school to do something like a flu clinic and that RN come through the department of Public Health.

I think they would have to look up their state code to see what is required for collegiate health services. I am sure that at the county level or state level there is someone that can give them guidance.

Do they understand the different levels of scope of practice between an RN and APRN? There are many things (depending on state) that an APRN can do that we cannot. You would be a less expensive alternative, but may not truly meet their needs. STD testing is one that comes to mind. Birth control issues are another thing. I think they would be an awesome population to deal with!!

These are all really great points! Thank you all for the feedback :)
