College of Dupage - ADN pre-req questions - chemistry, anatomy

U.S.A. Illinois

Published

Hello all,

I am currently taking my pre-requisite classes at the College of Dupage and have a few questions. I had initially taken the first semester anatomy course in the fall of 2004 and apparently, is no longer valid (5+ years have elapsed since its conclusion). I am *pretty* certain that COD will require me to re-take anatomy (no big deal)...but does anyone know for sure how strict they are with this rule? I figure with so many students vying for spots in the ADN program, the college will not have a problem finding students who meet all the requirements.

I also read that chemistry is required, either 1 year high school or 1 semester college. I received 2 A's in high school, 2 C's  (chemistry I & II) and 1 A (organic chemistry) in college, and then took Contemporary Chemistry at COD for fun for an A. Will COD take the A or C?

I should probably make an appointment to talk with the advisor but thought I'd stop by here first :)

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!!

Oh darn it. I think I should have posted this in the student forum under pre-nursing. Sorry!

I think COD only takes General Chemistry as a pre-requisite for their nursing program.

You are going to have to retake General Chemistry at COD because you need A's in all your pre-requisites to have a good chance of getting in.

COD only accepts around 110 students every fall.

Oh my, that is discouraging :crying2:

COD requires either one semester general chemistry (for health-science majors) or contemporary chemistry (of which I received an A). The two general chemistry courses I had taken previously were only for biology or chemistry majors (comparable to COD's Principles of Chemistry courses). I probably should speak with an adviser, though, just to make sure. Thanks!

You might be correct.

4) Complete chemistry: One year of high school chemistry with a grade of "C" or better for both semesters

OR

Chemistry 1105 or 1211 or equivalent with a grade of "C" or better

Note: Beginning Fall 2011, college chemistry with a laboratory component must be taken (Chemistry 1105 or 1211). High school chemistry will no longer be accepted.

5) Complete Anatomy & Physiology: Anatomy and Physiology 1551 or 1571 or equivalent with a grade of "C" or better (course must be completed between Jan. 8, 2005, and Jan. 8, 2010).

I think you missed the deadline for the class of 2010. :(

Agreed with above. COD will take your Contemporary assuming it's the same 1105 with lab. That one doesn't expire, but you'll need to re-take A&P 1 and 2 if they are more than 5 years old.

I think that's unfortunate, I think there should be a refresher course. That's a whole year.

:uhoh3: The Contemporary Chemistry course I took was from Summer 2005 and did not include the lab component. I did receive an A in organic chem lab (lab and lecture courses/grades were separate); however, I do believe I received a B+ in the lecture portion (silly me...it's been so long I forgot the grade wasn't an A!) I am thinking that I will have to repeat the chemistry class and anatomy (fortunately, I only took the first of the two course sequence). I had enrolled in the second course but lost my job along with the tuition reimbursement, which resulted in the decision to withdraw.:uhoh3:

I don't mind retaking courses, but money right now is very, very tight.

Yes, I second that! I'm working right now and paying for school and am nervous about adding nursing school on top of it. I'm hearing that it's definitely possible to hold a job and attend nursing school. I'm just going to prioritize and work hard. Good luck with your courses, I'm sure you'll do great and it'll probably be easier for you since you've already taken them!

Good luck to you as well! Will you be applying to the ADN program at COD and/or other programs at other institutions? I heard that West Suburban has a part-time night program which makes it slightly easier (?) to hold down a job while attending nursing school. I haven't researched many programs...I am putting all of my eggs in one basket!

No! You're making a mistake if you're putting all your eggs in one basket. You should do some research on other schools because remember COD gets way more than 500 applications for the RN program and they only accept applications once a year.

My friend was rejected from COD, but got accepted to a university RN program.

I understand that competition will be fierce, but I am confident that I will be accepted.

By any chance, do you know your friends stats? (gpa, classes completed, etc.)

I know someone with a 3.5 GPA from her bachelor's degree and a 4.0 in all the ADN prereqs and got on the waiting list. It is all about the new PAX entrance exam. You need a certain score and there is quite a bit of physics on it. Good luck.

Thanks. I haven't yet taken the PAX exam but I am not too worried. I am currently brushing up on my physics and feel quite comfortable that I will score well. :)
