Code Team, Patient Follow Up Survey

Published

Specializes in 25 yrs flight and ER experience.

I am wondering if I could get some information on "Code Teams" and patient follow up.

Does your hospital have a designated "Code Team" for cardiac arrest patients? Who makes up the team?

If the patient survives, is he/she interviewed afterwards about their experience and who does this interview?

What types of questions are asked?

I'd be grateful for any information you could give me. Thanks!

Any doctor in the house, or in the area, and nurses on the floor, resperatory therapy, and supervisor.

No, usually if a patient survives in good health is the best indication.

when a code blue or rapid response is called, at least one critical care unit rn responds, depending on which floor calls it (i.e. surgical icu goes to post-op heart floor and post-surgical floors, ccu goes to cardiac floors, neurotrauma icu goes to ortho and neuro). an er paramedic responds, as does respiratory therapy, a hospitalist, an intensivist if it's in a critical care area, phlebotomy, ekg, and nursing supervisor.

no, not that i'm aware of, but each code blue is reviewed by the code blue committee to make sure things went as they should have and look for problems with the system. that is how we ended up with particular icu nurses going to particular areas instead of ccu just responding to all codes.

anything else? that's all i've got...

Our code team includes the Stat RN or ICU charge, ED charge, ED MD, respiratory, phlebotomy, EKG tech, house manager, pharmacy, and security, and pastoral care if they are in house. Each has a designated role.

There is a post code audit sheet that is completed to check what went right and what went wrong.

As far as I know, the patient is not interviewed.

Specializes in OB, NICU, ER.

We have a code team, it consist of a MD, RNs, RTs and sometimes the CNA or Secretary gets in the mix, either doing CPR or as a runner.

The patients do not get interviewed afterwards, atleast not in the ER where I'm at

Specializes in Med/Surg.

Our code team consists of Respiratory therapy, ICU RN, pharmacist, hospitalist, anesthesiologist, nursing supervisor, and pastoral care (hope that's everybody!). No interview done later, to my knowledge.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but what would be the purpose of interviewing the patient? Any post-code patient that I've taken care of has had no recollection of the experience (for obvious reasons....).

Very good question cherrybreeze. I've worked critical care for over 30 years and have had some patients relate some interesting information about their resuscitation that they could not, and should not, have known about. I never had any training on this and just wondering if other nurses have had similar experiences. Also curious if any one knows of any educational programs that address this? Just wondering.

Thanks for your answer.
