COC - College of the Canyons - Spring 2014

U.S.A. California

Published

I'm starting this thread for everyone applying for COC's spring 2014 RN program. Please feel free to join in. We're all in this together! For anyone who's thinking of applying, the deadline for turning in your transcripts and requesting your prerequisite evaluation is tomorrow!

I'm an LVN hoping to get into the LVN to RN program. I applied last year and received an email notifying me that I qualified for the program but that they didn't have the required 20 qualified LVN applicants to offer the class. Booo hooo hooo... Oh well, I completed all of the General Ed classes in the meantime and have my fingers crossed for this time around :-)

I'm a little nervous about the TEAS V test and am starting to study for it. I read that the test is pretty challenging. Yikes!

I look forward to hearing from my fellow nail-biters!

Hi omgonlyinsilsttos!

Wow! Am I understanding correctly that Moorpark has a wait list that's two years long? COC doesn't maintain a wait list and their location doesn't attract as many applicants, which is a huge plus for new applicants! On the flip side it worked against me getting into the LVN to RN program! They're a pretty long drive from the Valley, Lancaster/Palmdale and Ventura county.

I totally understand not wanting to commute! Are you planning to take the 118 to the 405 to the 5? How's the traffic? I have to allow an hour and a half to get to the campus and park. At least it's a pleasant drive down the 126 :-)

Your friend already graduated from COC when she was accepted at Moorpark - hahahahaha!

Nine years of healthcare experience should put you on the top of the liist!

Hi there. I am contemplating submitting my application for Spring 2014. I am one of the next two alternates on the list for Fall 2013, and we were both invited to sit in on classes for the first week, starting August 26th. I don't know if I'm the first or the second alternate. So we will both sit there for two...three...who knows how many days until somebody decides to drop out.

This whole process is SO nerve wracking. I've made (AND not made!) a lot of other life-changing decisions based on the "no-yes-maybe" status of being an alternate, and it's nice to finally be at the end of this process.

I will only apply to COC because I didn't want to commute anywhere else. Next week I am moving to the AV, and I don't want to apply to AVC because it's been WAY more than 6 years since I took my science pre-reqs. That's another reason I preferred COC, was because there was no limit as to how long ago you could take your pre-reqs.

Anyway, good luck to ALL of you!

And this is just the beginning! :) Oh well, I've dealt with much worse in my life. Nursing school will be a piece of cake. HA!!

Welcome Heylove!

How exciting! You'll actually be in the classroom in ten short days! I think your chances are good that you'll get a permanent seat in the class :-) Life throws curve balls at all of us and there's a good chance that one or more of the students will, unfortunately, get hit with a last minute curve ball. I'll be counting down the days with you!

Do they require you to wear a uniform to class? In my LVN program we were required to wear a uniform to all classes and clinicals. Does the library have the assigned textbooks that you can use until you find out if you're in for sure? It's a bit of a sticky situation but they wouldn't have you sit in on the class unless they thought you had a good chance of getting in!

COC rocks! No time limit on pre-reqs!

I'm sending positive vibes your way!

Did you get the results from your TEAS test? Fingers crossed that you achieved your goal to better your score!

Hi, I'm not applying for spring, but I am finishing up my prerequisites at coc right now. I was just wondering if everyone will share their GPA so I have a good idea at where I should try to be at. Thanks:)

Hi dhart_89!

Congratulations on finishing up your prerequisites! They're a challenge!

When I attended the Information Session last year they said that your TEAS score weighed more heavily than your GPA. Your GPA does factor in but your TEAS score is given more weight. Of course other factors such as experience, other degrees you've attained, etc., weigh in as well.

I applied for the LVN to RN bridge program and the issue isn't competing for the highest TEAS score or GPA, it's whether or not they have the necessary twenty qualified LVN applicants in order to offer the Transitions into Nursing course!

My prerequisite GPA is 4.0 and my overall GPA is 3.92. I haven't taken the TEAS test yet. I'm sweating pretty hard about having to take the test because it's been years since I took the science classes!

I should have said that I am starting to end my prereqs. I just have the three sciences and will be done. This semester I am taking a&p along with three online classes (towards the bsn), and will take a&p 2 with micro in the spring. I'm hoping to get an A in each of the classes. I will be able to apply for next spring, and I hope to get accepted fast, and to be able to take the coc-csun bsn program. Right now my GPA is a 3.4 (which isn't that great, i know) but I am hoping to raise it with the rest of my classes. I am also striving to get a 4.0 in my nursing pre-reqs. I am just really hoping to be accepted right away, I want to be an RN before my son is 6, right now he is 2.

The following thread will give you a good idea of what GPA, TEAS scores and amount of experience that prospective COC applicants achieved and who ultimately was accepted into the program.

A&p plus three other classes is quite a workload! I took a&p and micro in the same semester and wanted to rip my eyeballs out and I didn't have a two year old to take care of! Good luck!

Hi Heylove -

I hope this suggestion is not too late but you should have submitted your application for Spring 2014. I can't remember now what is COC's policy on alternates but your chances of getting in is very high for next semester if you can't make it this semester. I was also an alternate back in Fall of 2012 but I was already informed before classes started that I was in. There were two alternates in our class but since no one dropped by the third day of classes they were asked to stop coming. One of the two alternates got in the following semester but I could not confirm if the second alternate got in as well.

Good luck, you are almost there!

Hi 2 Dawn!

No Moorpark does not have a waiting list but, they hold your app for 2 years before you have to reapply, so im coming up on my 2 year mark! : (

If I got accepted to COC i would take the 118 to the 405 to the 5 correct.....i heard its not bad going that direction its the other direction that has traffic...lets hope so! haha!

Its so nerve wracking waiting around so long.... ugh! I hope my 9 years healthcare exp helps. My TEAS score wasnt to great : ( I never have been a good test taker especially when it has to do with stuff i havent learned about in a long time ! : )

Wow, two years is a very long painful amount of time to wait! When do they let you know if you got accepted?

I'm glad to hear that it's an easy drive to COC :-) There's nothing worse than showing up to class feeling like a zombie after a miserable drive in heavy traffic!

After reading threads on this board, it appears that COC gives a lot of weight to healthcare experience :-)
