what do you do for birthday's on your floor or unit? do you have a party? what gifts have you given co-workers?
This is done at random at my hospital really...some people bring in a cake or something for their good friends...and I see no probelms with that.
I, for one really didn't care to announce it this year, so I didn't. People said "Oh man...we would have brought in a cake for you"...but I don't need a cake really (don't eat sweets, not a big fan of them)...but then I say..."well...instead how about you just help me transfer this patient in room ___...that will be a very happy birthday present to me and my shoulder! LOL!".
I just don't see it as a big deal, and if people knew and said something that is refreshing...but my birthday is a family/home kinda thing to me :).
OH yeah..btw, mine was March 2...38 now...got a garden tiller which I actually honestly wanted...just did a patch 26 x 14 for a veggie garden I want in under two hours!!!!! NOW that was a great gift for me!

I was going to edit my last post but too late I guess. Anyway, right at this moment, there is a roaring retirement party going on my floor. It is in its third hour. Yes, during work hours and on work property. I can barely hear myself think. It is embarrassing answering the phone with all that noise.
We have at least one of these a week and some weeks there are multiple parties in a given day.
