Co-worker practiced outside of scope

I have no idea if you are obligated.............but do you want to? Is the LPN a knowledgeable staff who was trying to really help the patient? Or was it definately a case of ............always doing tasks that is out of his/her scope?

i suggest you to talk to the nurse directily first and give her a little warning first. since patient is alert and oriented x3, you can ask the patient again whether or not she is still practicing it, and if she is still doing it, then i suggest you to report her to bon. its just my opinion/:paw:

You already did your part and reported it to your supervisor. Step away now. It was their choice not to report it to The BON. You are not under and further obligation since the incident was handled....Just mho.

Last week a patient told me she was given her IVP pain medication by a LPN. She had a PICC line. This is definitley not allowed in my state. To make matters worse, the RN on duty signed for it.

Management has decided to not report this to the BON. The involved will be reprimanded and will be fired if it ever occurs again.

I just wonder since I reported the incident to management, am I under any further obligations to report the incident to the BON?

Your professional obligation for patient safety was satisfied by reporting this to administration. Granted it was a dual bad error in judgement but hopefully both RN and LPN have learned and will not repeat this.

Both were disciplined and warned.

Unless further patient safety is comprimised let it go.

Thanks. That is what I thought also. I did not want to go to the BON, but also did not want to get myself into trouble by not reporting it.

Hopefully the two nurses will learn from this and never let it happen again

I live in Illinois and am not sure if lpn's are allowed to give IV antibiotics.
