CNA/OB Tech

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Greetings,

I was wondering if anyone can tell me if a CNA and OB Tech are one in the same? I read a few articles on the site, and it sounds as if they are. I will be starting a CNA class soon, and it ends the last week of December. I live in the Atlanta area. Does anyone know of any hospitals that hire CNA/OB Techs for L&D? I would love to work in the L&D department (that is what I want to specialize in once I become a RN) After reading about the OB tech, it sounded really interesting. Also, I was wondering if I would need additional training to be a OB Tech, and if so, would a hospital train me? Look forward to hearing your responses.

Specializes in OB.

OB techs are rare nowadays. Most L&D units now have OB Scrub Techs who are the ones that scrub the c/sections. While we are not in the OR we are in lady partsl deliveries mostly dealing with the baby, vitals, footprints, etc, the rest of the time is basically CNA work and stocking. But you have to be a surgical technologist and have a CNA license to work L&D as a tech with your CPR and NRP. (At least at my hospital). For mother/baby on the other hand you only need your CPR and your CNA.

I actually think I saw some job postings at North Fulton Hospital in Alpharetta. You might want to look into that. Good luck.

I live by a hospital that hires patient care assistants (esentially CNAs) in various units including OB. It's not considered a "tech" job though.

Thanks for your responses. Tinkk, you mentioned you live by a hospital that hires CNAs? May I ask which one?

Specializes in Neonatal Nurse Practitioner.

All of the OB Techs that I have seen are Surgical Techs who work in L&D.
