I am super nervous about taking the skills part of the exam. I read that now you have to perform three skill in 1/2 hour down from 5 skills in two hours. What should I expect and what advice or encouragement can you give me?

You should easily perform each skill in 10 minutes. If you practice the routine you will have less freezes and may get done with time to spare. When I did the skills test they asked for me to wash my hands properly, ambulate a partner to the door and back (about 5 yards), and I think I also did blood pressure. Make sure you verbalize what you are doing and if you have forgotten something. The person assessing you will not give you any hints or smiles which was a little intimidating but once I started on a skill my confidence grew. Good luck I am sure you will do well.
oh....and note that your skill requirements will probably be different than mine

I was nervous about mine too. But just don't think about the time. They give you enough time to begin with. If you worry about the time you will mess up. When you perform your skills that are given, just go down the list in your head what to do. I know here in MI we were given I believe an hour to do skills then two hours to do how knowledge. I finished both quick and passed. You'll do good! Good luck!
Thank you for your responses. In NY Vitals and hand washing are not considered skills...its mandatory that we perform them...hand washing must be done with each skill. I just need to practice and time myself...We need to take a volunteer so i'm going to take my husband, i've been practicing with him. Thanks again.

I took my state skills exam last week. I had to do Vitals, washing hands asepticaly, peri-care male, partial bed bath, and....shoot, I can't remember the last one. But the nurse that was testing me was pretty nice. She told me that if I felt I missed a step I could go back and re-do it and that it wouldn't be counted against me. I was so nervous thru the whole thing but she went easy on me.....I think. I still haven't got the results back.
Just PRACTICE. And hopefully they won't make you work with a broken bed and "pretend" when the bed is raised or lowered
