CMA looking for online LPN course

Published

Hey there,

I have a CMA degree (plus phlebotomy) and I'm looking for an online LPN course. Does anyone know of one? http://www.nursedegree.com/ used to have a CMA to RN program but they dropped it last September. Now I'm seriously bummed out :o. I'm on the island of Kauai where the waiting list for the RN program can run up to 3 years if not more.....

I'm planning to relocate to Grass Valley, CA next spring. Yuba College seems to offer LPN courses but I don't think anything in the evening time. Can anyone offer some suggestions? Thanks!

You must be talking about the former CMA to RN program EC had. Deaconess offers a online program and you do clinicals in your area. Now I am pretty sure you have to do their online LPN program first then move into the RN program. The tuition is right around 435 hour. They have financial aid ,loans grants things like. www.deaconess.edu

I called Deaconess and they said they don't have such a program. They said they used to work in conjunction with EC but since EC stopped the program they can't offer it anymore. I couldn't find the CMA to LPN program on their website either....I'm super bummed cuz I went and did the whole CMA thing with the idea to then go for LPN. Now I'm totally stuck with the CMA. That income doesn't even make enough to put my baby in daycare and cover my bills.....:crying2:

Deaconess does have a online LPN program. it is not a CMA to LPN program though. Search this website and you will find all kinds of info. Go to the website and look for ASN with PN componet. That is the program you are looking for. And deaconess has nothing to do with EC,they are seperate colleges. You are probley not going to get credit for your CMA program and will need to start at the begining. If you went to a CC for your CMA you might be able to transfer some of your pre classes. I know what you mean about no money. I have 5 kids and my husband and I are both in school.:) :)

Holy Sh*&%#@t,

Why were they telling me otherwise then? This is weird . I'm gonna call 'm again right away tomorrow. Thanks so much for pointing this out. It's a ray of light in what had become a pretty dark situation (I was heading for serious depression). I don't care about the non-crediting for the CMA, as long as I can get the LPN online. I hope it doesn't take longer than one year and cost a fortune. Are you and your husband both doing this course?

Thank you soo much; I feel a whole lot better now!

Nothin' but respect for you and your family kickin' butt there in education land!!!

I am doing the LVN to BSN program through Indiana State University and my husband is a junior at University of Texas at Arlington majoring in Software Engineering. I almost went through Deaconess but I figured for the money they charge I might as well get my BSN. They also told me that applications are being accepted up until 11/15/04 for the spring entry. Now Im not sure how correct that is but I know for sure that the program you need does exist at this school...I wish you all the luck in the world .. You sound like you have what it takes..:) :) Let me know if you need anything. I would be more than happy to help you...:)

Wow, I better get the show on the road then with that deadline. Do you know off-hand how much the ASN with PN component costs (and the ASN-RN?)? Yeah you are one step ahead of me cuz you already have that LPN degree. My CMA degree seems pretty worthless in the online field, which sucks cuz it wasn't all that easy to obtain (had I known all this before I would have gone this route from the get-go). Again, thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction. You're a life-saver!!!

Maybe I missed something but to my knowledge Excelsior College (EC) and Deaconess College of Nursing (DCN) NEVER had any such working program. They are two separate colleges and I can't see how/why it would benefit them to have a program together.

DCN does not have a CMA to LPN program it is a ASN program for anyone who wants to apply. There is no prerequsit of CMA, PN, EMT or anything else. You just apply. If you are accepted you begin at the begining and progress through the PN component and then on to the RN component. If one is a LPN they can also enroll in DCN but would obviously not be required to complete the PN component.

EC used to accept CMA's into there ADN program but I believe at some point this was or is in the process of changing. EC does have requirements (see the web site) as this is not the same program DCN offers and requires specific medical education.

I am sorry you are getting misguided information at DCN I would suggest you call back. Get the person's name with whom you spoke to at DCN because something doesn't sound right here.

Yes, I agree. I have not heard of any agreement or arrangement between EC and DCN. Hmm...that would make a neat hybrid program though, wouldn't it?

I do know that Thomas Edison State College has an agreement with EC in regards to their RN-BSN programs.

I agree with Opal, call 'em back and get better information.

I just left two messages with Deaconess.

What happened yesterday is that EC told me they dropped their program since Sept 1st and they referred me to Deaconess, who then said:" well we don't have a CMA to LPN program, can't help you there. You might wanna call EC." And then I told them that EC just told me to call them cuz they dropped their program. I'm just weirded out that the lady at Deaconess didn't just say: "hey but you can do the ASN with PN program here with us and you'll be an LPN in a year." But thank God Denise pointed that one out to me here on the forum, so now I'm on it :)!

I wanted to thank everybody so much for replying!! It means a lot to me. If you knew my career history you'd understand why I'm so desperate to get going in nursing. I already have a Masters degree and I have had to re-educate myself 3 times sofar and I keep having the worst of luck and twists of fate with all my career endeavors :o. I'm just hoping that this nursing thing works out for me now, otherwise I really don't know it anymore.....

Visualize me as a nurse at a pediatrics department of a hospital or clinic please:nurse:

Glad to hear you were able to get this straightened out.

Good luck and keep us posted. :)
