I think the no clog policies are mainly geared to backless ones - as you pointed out, it would be very easy to slip off your foot. Generally, all clogs are somewhat more difficult to run in. Yes, I realize this only applies to rare emergencies - most of us don't spend our days sprinting. :chuckle But it is a consideration.
I love backless shoes - rarely wear anything else until it starts snowing. But after a year & a half of clinicals, I have to say that I wouldn't wear anything other than a full shoe for clinicals or work. One messy floor situation, where you realize what you get on your shoes, socks & lower pant legs, convinced me.
We are allowed only those with a back strap, once again, so they don't slip off. None of my fellow students wear them though. I have some Nursemates sneakers. I got them in wide-width, and they are so much better than my regular sneakers. At the end of the day, my feet feel just the same as when I woke up!
They are sorta ugly though, but I'll take comfort over fashion any day!
No backless clogs or clogs with one strap, period. The shoe musts cover your entire heel. No cloth shoes either. Everyone in my group wears running or walking shoes, no clogs.
How strict the instructor depends on how white you shoes must be. Last semseter she warned us "If your shoes are white but the Nike swoosh isn't, I don't want to see it." This semser our instructor is a bit more relaxed.
I have a pair of pure white Avias. I had to retire my K-Swiss after the 16,876,544,614 times I almost fell in the shower room at our LTC facility. Traction is my friend.

I noticed that several people have mentioned that they aren't allowed to wear clogs with their uniforms. Why not? Is it just backless clogs that you can't wear or is it clogs in general? I would DIE if I couldn't wear my Danskos on the floor.
I wear the "Professional" style which are not backless. I wouldn't want to wear those, anyway. I'd probably end up accidentally hitting a patient with my shoe when it flew off my foot! :chuckle
What's the deal with the "shoe policy" at your school?
