Clogs!

I noticed that several people have mentioned that they aren't allowed to wear clogs with their uniforms. Why not? Is it just backless clogs that you can't wear or is it clogs in general? I would DIE if I couldn't wear my Danskos on the floor. ;) I wear the "Professional" style which are not backless. I wouldn't want to wear those, anyway. I'd probably end up accidentally hitting a patient with my shoe when it flew off my foot! :chuckle

What's the deal with the "shoe policy" at your school?

No backless clogs or clogs with one strap, period. The shoe musts cover your entire heel. No cloth shoes either. Everyone in my group wears running or walking shoes, no clogs.

How strict the instructor depends on how white you shoes must be. Last semseter she warned us "If your shoes are white but the Nike swoosh isn't, I don't want to see it." This semser our instructor is a bit more relaxed.

I have a pair of pure white Avias. I had to retire my K-Swiss after the 16,876,544,614 times I almost fell in the shower room at our LTC facility. Traction is my friend.

Everyone at our school has to wear the same style of Nursemates...full backed shoe with shoestrings. We have to order it from the same place we get our uniforms, unfortunately.

No clogs for us, just white (all white) shoes, with no color anywhere. :):)

I heard many times about Dansko and went to the store to look at them. Beside they are expensive and ugly, they are very HEAVY. How comfortable they can be?

Danskos are without a doubt the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. I have three pairs (white for school, black, and brown), and I literally wear the black or brown ones about 350 days per year (since 2000 when I bought my first pair). They're not at all heavy when I'm wearing them. Most people I know complain from time to time that their feet hurt, but the only time mine hurt are those few days each year when I'm not wearing my Danskos! :) I bought two pairs in 2000 and the third pair in 2001, and they're all still in great condition. They are expensive, but when you can wear them every day for four years without replacing them, the "cost of ownership" is very low. My boyfriend buys about four pairs of shoes every year at $30-$50 each. I bought three pairs for $100 each, but $300 spread out over four years is a lot cheaper than $200 per year for shoes. :) The "ugly" factor? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I think that Danskos are no more ugly than those god-awful "chunky boots" that so many females are wearing these days. But that is beside the point. I could care less if my shoes are "ugly" as long as my feet and back do not hurt after working a twelve-hour shift.

IMHO nothing can compare to a good pair of O.R. clogs (with a back) ... I bought one when I started in the O.R. as a tech about two years ago, and they've lasted me since then (no, they're not pretty.) Now that I'm in nsg school, clogs are apparently not an option. Why I'm not so sure. They're good both for standing for hours at a time and, yes, you can run your ### off in them, I have done so more times than I can count. And they make an oh-so-dramatic noise when a stretcher goes by with about nine pairs of clogs attached it (level I trauma center = this is familiar sound) ... maybe that's why they're so out of favor with some folks
