Clinical's

Published

I am just starting out, I have heard a variety of successful nurses state there was something about their clinical's that would turn their stomach for whatever reason. So my question is, my concern would be trauma/ER settings. How much of this is involved in clinical's for a BSN? I don't mind a bit of it but by no means is my goal to be a trauma nurse...

Any help on the subject would be greatly appreciated.....

But seriously, I think it depends on the program. My LPN program didn't have any ER/trauma clinical time at all. My roommate attended a BSN program and I remember him saying that his ER rotation was very boring. I'd imagine any ER clinical would be, by nature, very variable. And I doubt they would allow a nursing students too close to any trauma center action. Could be wrong about that, but it seems to me they'd just get in the way.

Besides, you might be surprised by what you find stomach turning, and what you don't. I thought I could handle anything, but I nearly fainted when witnessing surgery for the first time.

I did one ER clinical day. (Nothing happened, one patient with abdominal pain avoiding a court date lol)

8 weeks in ICU

Some students were assigned to CVICU, MICU, or trauma Burn ICU.

I'm in a BSN program, and honestly I believe it depends on your program. I don't do week rotations to the ER/trauma areas, but I do get assigned to these areas for one day, and what I do is I just shadow a nurse for the day. So far I have went to:

1.) Adult ER

2.) Wound Care (Outpatient, nothing crazy)

3.) Cardiac Cath OR

4.) Pediatrics ICU (PICU)

5.) Pediatrics Hemocology (Again, outpatient...nothing crazy)

6.) Neonatal ICU (NICU)

7.) Pediatrics ER

8.) Psychiatric (walk-in section) of the ER

9.) OBGYN OR

Other than that...I stay on the floor :)

Mine too.

I didn't spend a day in the ER during my BSN program. The only students who did ER clinicals were those who did it during their senior preceptorship, i.e. they chose to do it. Whether or not you get placed on a trauma unit for clinical is hit or miss. You go where the school tells you to go.
