Clinical rotation sites / Preceptors

Published

Hi everyone,

Am a student studying for the FNP program, my clinical rotations are starting off next year and am finding it so hard to get a clinical site / preceptor for the Adult care, due to the Covid 19 surge, finding a  site/preceptor  has been so difficult, I live in Mansfield Grand prairie area in Texas, will really appreciate any help.

Thanks

Julie.

If by next year you mean a year from now, I would recommend waiting until the surge has had a chance to pass. Many places are facing uncertainty right now and they're not going to commit resources to a student when they really don't get any benefit to them for the time being put in. If by next year you mean early 2021, you may have trouble for the same reason, but you don't have the luxury of time. I'd consider delaying a semester if necessary to save yourself some hassle. I just had to take a delayed grade in my final semester because my rotation site closed to students at my midterm week. They had not done so in the Spring, and I mistakenly thought it wouldn't be that different this time around. If you have to find someone soon, networking may be your key. Find anyone with a contact in the field and get names and then email, cold call, whatever you can to introduce yourself and make connections. This is a challenging time for anyone trying to complete a clinical program, good luck!

I used NP hub. I had to pay, but I want to graduate on time I start clinicals in the Spring

I've mentioned this before, get in touch with the docs at your work. If you work in acute care or even sub-acute, chances are the docs do family practice outside. Even some specialty docs do family practice. Ask colleagues and fellow nurses that you work with if they know anyone that can precept. Networking in healthcare is vast, you just have to put forth the effort and speak up. If you have a PCP that you've known for awhile, it doesn't hurt to contact them. My 1st clinical was with my PCP (unfortunately now, she is not taking students due to COVID). Take that same thought with friends and family and have them ask their PCPs.

As the poster above me said, it actually might be a good idea with push NP school till next semester or another year. Last thing anyone would want is paying another semester or two fees. I would have done so but COVID hit smack in the middle of my 2nd year. I fortunately can do a few hours of clinical each week, but I'll most likely have to extend my graduation by another semester due to low hours/patient totals (July is my initial finish date).
