I am a CRNI with six years experience placing PICCs, caring for all kinds of CVLs, and placing difficult to place PIVs. I love this field of nursing so much. Can anyone recommend a program that offers a Clinical Nurse Specialist degree in Vascular Access? THX!

so....how difficult was the CRNI exam? I am scheduled to take it in September and more than a little worried as my entire experience before I became the only PICC nurse for our hospital is in Cardiology. Technically I am pretty good...... cath lab/ir took care of that aspect for me. I went to a 3 day review seminar last month that BLEW MY MIND! Any tips??? I sure would appreciate it!

Mary- Honestly, the CRNI Exam is challenging. A three day course isn't enough to prepare you. It helped, I am sure, but it probably only gave you an idea of what to study. This is what I did to prepare. You may not need this much, but it's what helped to make be feel prepared, and I spent no money doing it. I got ahold of a copy of the INS text book and Standards and read them cover to cover and made notes. I got a list of the chemo drugs we are required to know and researched those. I would be happy to email you my notes if you would like. It will save you some time and they are pretty exhaustive. I did take the test four years ago, so you will need to look at the new INS standards to make sure you know of any updates. I studied about an hour a day (I was unwilling to give it more time) for a few months prior to the test. If you'd like my notes and you are comfortable posting you email here I'll send them to you today.

Good luck! You can do it!

I think the best way to do it is to take the nurse practitioner program and concentrate on interventional radiology where your internship will be in interventional radiology and concentrate on IR proceudres which would include vaccular access.

I agree with picclineman. That is the only way I have figured out how to do it. Maybe someday there will be an advanced degree in Vascular Access.

sgbpiccrn....I have read areas on this site for some time but never posted or chatted...I too am studying for my CRNI exam. Am awaiting my books from INS to arrive. Did you use anyones 'study' prep books, CD's? I would love to add your notes to my collection!

There is no agencies in my area (Pgh, Pa) who teaches PICC or Midline insertion classes. Am trying to locate companies in the area that are wanting a CRNI prepared nurse that will do on the job training.

Thanks for any help!
