Clinic Rules- Do you have them posted?

Published

Hi, does anyone have clinic rules (expectations) posted in their clinic? I'm a new school nurse but I'm a former teacher. I know the job descriptions & settings are very different but after my first 3 days I noticed that a lot of the middle school students need reminders about behaviors as they enter the clinic. Any feed back is welcomed.

I have a poster in my office that says "Nurse Linda's Office "Rules!" in a fun print. Then I have butterflies on it and each one has something typed on it -

inside voice, make good choices, good manners, compassion, patience, respect, smile if you can, tell the truth, be nice, listen, use your words - no whining. It's casual, colorful, and I can use it to remind kids of my expectations - special needs school so the visual helps!

I'm thinking I might need to post some. The nurse last year posted some and I've just left them up. But, I think they need to be revised and perhaps posted a little more visual. But I'm torn since I work with high schoolers who should know better, but who really don't seem to.

I am constantly telling student A to stop asking student B why there are here. Seriously!!! MYOB!!!!

I also have been known to call out "YOU'RE WELCOME!" when students leave my office with no polite tone or thank you.

I will also just stare at students expectantly until they say please.

I am big on manners. :D

I've also started calling out "YOU'RE WELCOME!!!" as the entitled ones wander off with their band-aid.

I state my 2 rules every time a student walks into the clinic. They are the same as Barb G's:

Shut up! Shut up and sit down!

The biggest ones I use are: come in and sit down, don't interrupt me when I am speaking with another student or adult, wait your turn. When I Ask you what is wrong, you tell me, don't just point to your nurse's pass.
