clinic in the bronx, dangerous?

Published

I'm going for my first interview since I graduated in May and I'm wondering about the safety of the area. It's located in East Tremont Avenue, and I have heard some crazy stories about shootings and such in the bronx. Anyone know this area? Would it be really bad idea to walk in a suit, alone during the day there?

You should be ok during the daytime. I used to do home care visits as part of my previous job in that area and I dressed professional and had no issue. Just stay on the main roads where theres more people. I work until late night now at a city hospital in Brooklyn and as long as I don't walk alone more than a block to the bus it's fine. I also don't wear my scrubs into or out of the hospital. I change into regular clothes for two reasons 1) to prevent spread of germs from the street to the patients and 2) to be less noticeable outside while I'm waiting for the bus.

I'm from the Bronx so I can tell you that it depends on what the cross street is. There is a large part of east tremont that stretches from parkchester to throggs neck that is not bad at all. East tremont is one of the main avenues (lots of ppl, shopping, out in the open, etc), so for the most part it would not be considered dangerous. The bronx has a bad rep, but aside from certain areas of the south bronx it is really not as bad as ppl think. Let me know if you have any other questions.

It's 471 East Tremont avenue, not sure of the cross street.

It is not the most ideal area in the Bronx, but if you are working day shift then I highly doubt you will run into problems. Shady characters may come out at night but it's not a place that I would feel like my life or safety is in danger while working there. East tremont is a very busy main road in the bronx. If you take a job there, you will be fine. Good luck!

What if I work at night like take a subway? Bad idea?

We live in the Technology age and quick Google search on the address shows a map of the area. The Facility is located at the corner of Washington Ave and E. Tremont Ave. Other nearby cross street are: Bathgate Ave, Park Ave, Webster Ave, 3rd Ave, etc.

The realities are, no matter where in New York City you find yourself, if you exercise poor judgement, you can become a victim of crime. No one can predict with any level of certainty whether you will be "safe" working at that location. Your best bet is to get as much information (indirectly) while on your interview or speak with someone who has worked in the area. You could potentially walk the area during the day or night (with a friend if possible) to gage your level of comfort with the area.

I have lived/worked in Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx and have never been a victim of any crime. I have lived in some not so nice areas in those three Boroughs. Remember, you can also be a victim of a crime on the Subway itself. Is it possible for you to drive to/from work and are there any on-site parking?

No need to be so worried about crime especially in the daytime. You can be a victim of crime in a "good, safe neighborhood" also if you dont pay attention. So just be sure you are paying attention to your surroundings ...not looking into you cell phone or have ipod in your ears and dont flash any electronics or anything of value. You dont want to attract attention to yourself for what valuable you got and not paying attention to your surroundings can make you a target also. If you will be wearing scrubs at work, you can change into/out of them as you get to/leave work. You should be fine. Also public transportation is no least safe than driving. I do Not drive and i have taken public transportation to and from my home care assignments all over NYC (many in shady neighborhoods) and now to my hospital job. As long as you remain aware of your surroundings, stay in well lit/populated areas, and dont flash valuables or scrub uniform (i say scrubs because most people think people wearing scrubs have money), you will be ok.

ok, thanks everyone!! It was not the best of areas but I made it fine. I felt like I stuck out like a sore thumb in a business suit. My only worry now is if I work at night and the walk to the subway.

It depends where. I've worked for ACS for over 8 years, and my office was located a block from Hoe Ave. In many parts of the Bronx are a lot of drugs and a lot of cra-cra people as well as terminal diseases due to sharing of needles other abuses. Just be careful for any needle stick injuries and be very aware of your surroundings.

how did you apply for the job? online or in person

Can you take a cab to a better area to catch the subway at night if you don't feel safe? Not ideal but if you don't feel safe it might help
