I like 'em both for different reasons. I really like Cleveland, but I'm not sure if I could handle the winters up there. Columbus doesn't get the lake effect snow like Cleveland does. Columbus has a lot of really nice suburbs to live in (my brother lived in Columbus for years) and seems (to me) to be a bit spread out more than Cleveland.
As for where to work...both places have really good facilities. It'd be a tough call.
I guess I didn't help you too much, huh?
My advice would be to visit both for a few days to get a feel for the environment & that should help you decide.
I did several travel nurse assignments in Columbus years ago and loved the city! The assignment wasn't bad either -- obviously -- I returned twice to the same place to work. :)
I don't know about Cleveland. I've only visited near there when Sea World was open there, but it isn't there anymore. :)
Don't know about Cleveland - only been there a couple times on long weekends - but I have lived in the Columbus area for 7 years and love it!!!! 3 major hopsital systems - OSU which is union and has a huge focus on research, OhioHealth - has a great level I trauma center at Grant, and Mt. Carmel - which is where I work - and I am very happy there. Mt. Carmel is a large hospital system with lots of opportunities for growth but still feels like a small comfortable community. All 3 places have nice new heart centers - OSU has the better benefits because of it being a state job. However, they can be mandated 4 hours a week. How often that happens depends on what unit you work on. The James Cancer Hospital at OSU is a fantastic place. Good luck with your decision, there are wonderful opportunities out there everywhere.
