Cleveland/Akron areas

My husband and I are considering a move to Cleveland, Akron or somewhere in between. I am set to start pre-reqs here in Richmond, VA this fall.

Once I am done with them I can be placed on the 24 month waiting list for the ADN program.

What are the wait lists like in the Cleveland area? How are hospitals? Is the demand for RNs high? What areas should we look at? We have 3 children so the area would need to have a good school system.

hello, Im in the area you speak of(north east ohio)....Im not certain of the demand as i have not yet graduated. I do know there are several large hospital systems and medical schools up here.

You came to the right place. I just got out of the Navy a few months back and moved back to Ohio. I am living in Tallmadge which is one of the small towns around the Akron area. My wife passed her Nclex a couple months ago and has been working in Barberton (another small town around Akron). I will be starting classes at Akron University this summer to get my BSN. So I am in a pretty good position to answer most of your questions.

As far as wait lists go... I know Stark Community College says they do have a wait list and offer an ADN......Akron University (BSN) has NO WAIT LIST they only take the best applicants each year, which is why I chose to go there...if you get good grades chances are you will be accepted, they choose students based on their Science GPA.

There is a pretty good demand for RN's here. There are many hospitals within a 20 mile radius of akron...at least 5 that i can think of right around akron, i am sure Cleveland has a lot up there too. My wife had no problem getting interviews; she went to a lot of them till she found what she wanted. Summa Health offered $21 an hour +2 dollar night shift differential. Barberton hospital offered $23 +2 dollar night shift differential....and plenty of overtime available.

I had to research this move a few months ago and plan out my college too, so I know how much trouble it can be to make these important decisions for the future of your family! When I was planning my move here, a CRNA that lives here gave me a lot of good inside information on this area and the schools so I would be happy to pass on the favor to you :)

I could write a novel on just the general information I have gathered about this area, and I am still learning. By the way, was there any reason why you are going for the ADN vs. BSN? In this area....with the wait times...you are usually further ahead just going straight for the BSN...3 years for a 2 year ADN degree/or 4 years for a 4 year bachelors....(I detest wait lists...makes no sense to me why I should have to wait to give someone my money for an education).

University of Akron is a good choice for a school....They've been kicking butt, revamping the program, and their reputation has steadily increased. They are up to a 94-ish% pass rate for the NCLEX. Good program, you get in based soley on GPA (oh, yeah..they did recently change it to "science" GPA), which makes it relatively stress free as long as you have a fairly decent GPA. I just graduated from Akron's program last week...so I MAY be a little biased:wink2:.

No problem getting a job in pretty much any area....employers stalked us.

What type of community do you like? Rural, suburban, city?

If you like a more rural community that is still close to everything, Wayne county is nice, and has several excellent school districts.

Hey it does sound like you know alot of answeres.... do you know the pay rate for new LPNs? I am curious because I want to work as an LPN while I go back for my RN.

I will soon be a Nursing Student, so I don't have any first hand knowledge of lpn pay rates, but I'll see if my wife can discreetly ask around at work and get back to you in a day or two

Bumping this, does anyone know what the wait list is like for Cuyahoga Community College? I am taking prereqs this fall and should be able to take their NET in January.

I am going the ADN route because of tuition cost and commute. I live in a suburb right near the lake, and gas prices are killing our budget. I want to go onto a BSN program afterwards with either U of Akron or Kent State.

To the OP, Cuyahoga County where Cleveland is located has literally dozens of hospitals, from small community to huge teaching hospitals. Cleveland Clinic is an excellent hospital for critical care experience, MetroHealth is a level one trauma hospital, University Hospitals has Rainbow Babies for peds and NICU. Most of the smaller hospitals are affiliated with the big three hospitals, but still retain their individual feel, KWIM? There are some great, family friendly communities like Lakewood, Berea, Westlake, Parma, etc.

Cuahoga Community College has a good rep, too. They graduate a large class each year, and have consistent high pass rates. Oh, and Cleveland Clinic and Parma Hospital have set up nursing programs with CCC to train people who already work there or want work there. Cleveland Clinic has a generous tuition assistance program if you agree to work for them for 1-2 years.

a friend from high school just graduated from UAkron's BSN program....last week I guess.......and apparently she's got a job already at Akron Children's. My mom's an RN and she has only good things to say about Akron's nursing program -- and she is NOT an alumna!

I am not a nurse or even a nursing student anymore, but do visit this site occassionally. My niece graduated from Lorain County Community College in Elyria with her RN last year. They have a good reputation also, but do have wait lists. I believe Cuyhaoga Community College has a wait list also. As for hospitals there are so many in this area, just from the Cleveland Clinic which has linked with several hospitals such as Fairview, Lakewood, Lutheran and then you have Parma and Southwest hospitals as well as MetroHealth. All of these are in Cuyahoga County and then in Lorain county there is Elyria Memorial and Community Health Partners. These hospitals are all west of Cleveland or on the West side of Cleveland. There are many more East that I don't even know about.

There are several very nice communities also to live in with very good schools such as Bay Village, Westlake, Olmsted Falls, Avon, Amherst. Once again there are good ones east of Cleveland that I don't know about.

Pay seems to be pretty good also, my niece started out making $26 as a PRN working evening shift and I believe she already has gotten a raise.

Hi, [COLOR=#003366]NavyVet. I'm planning on applying for a nursing program in OH soon, but since I'm kind of new to that town, I really need information about the programs there.

I'm considering to apply for Tri-C, but I've been hearing that their program is quite unorganized, and weeds out students a lot before the two-thirds of period of the program.

So, I was wondering if anyone, including you, knows a program with stable and organized system.

I believe university programs are more organized, compared to CC program, but I need to consider my budget also, so I'm planning to take the ADN route, then will transfer to BSN program.

so, does anyone have any information about the nursing programs in OH?
