CLEP exams

Hello Again,

I was curious to see if anyone took the CLEP exams in place of their pre-reqs? If so, were the exams hard, which subjects did you take them in? And did the schools you applied to take them?

I took the Human Growth and Development CLEP several years ago. Not hard if you knew your stuff, but it wasn't accepted by my nursing program because the exam (at that time) did not cover enough gerontology.

I took the Sociology CLEP last year. I bought a study guide/book with CD. The book contained 3 practice tests. The book contained about 80 pages of reading. I read the book twice, and studied with the tests until I felt comfortable. The whole process took about 3 to 4 weeks. I passed easily.

I "CLEPped out" of Sociology and Humanities. I didn't study and had no problem with either test, but I had a strong foundation in both from high school.

I would have taken every CLEP they offered but my school only accepted a max of 10 credit hours of CLEP courses.

I took some clep exams basically for fun and to complete a BS from www.tesc.edu

Analizing and interpreting literature- very easy

Introduction to educational psychology- interesting took some reading

Human growth and development- not bad

Biology- easy but I had AP biology in highschool, A+P, micro ect before

College Mathmatics- easy just algerbra

Natural sciences- easy but I have taken lots of science classes before

I think that nursing school would not accept too many of these, especialy since science classes dont have labs. But it is a good way to fill in arts/social sciences for degree requirements.

I took CLEP tests for English Comp. and Fundamentals of Biology. I had taken excellent courses in high school, and didn't see the point in repeating them in college. The tests were not difficult, in my opinion, and were accepted by both the university and school of nursing. (That was 25 years ago.)

Nowadays, many high schools offer community college courses to juniors and seniors that allow them to get college credit for advanced high school coursework, while completing college general-education requirements at very little cost. It's a win-win, in my opinion.

I would seriously consider either method of reducing college coursework and expense.

I highly recommend the CLEP exams. I just took Intro to Psych, and passed it easily with a little study from the guide published by REA. I've scheduled Intro to Sociology for the beginning of May and am currently studying that. My college is accepting both. Each test is costing me $80; $60 to CLEP and $20 to the college. It's worth it (to me) for three credit hours...
