Clayton State vs Mercer

Published

Hi,

I have been accepted at Ga Baptist (Mercer) and am waiting to hear from Clayton State University. Any thoughts on which school would prepare me better? Ga Baptist will take 6 semesters, Clayton only 4 (I am a 2nd degree student), and tuition is less at Clayton, but do Ga Baptist grads really get better jobs right after graduation as they claim? Thanks

Hey

Congrats on your acceptance to GBCN. Like you, I am a 2nd degree nursing student. I am a junior at GBCN and I can tell you that I honestly love everything about the program.

It is longer (and yes, more $) than most, but the positive side is that you get an entire year of more experience that other grads don't have, the faculty are amazing, and you will have your NSNA membership paid for. Piedmont offers a full scholarship program to GBCN student only, so if you are looking to work there, you should go for it! GBCN also offers the Fast Track option, you must be selected for it but you will finish in 2.5 years instead of 3 years.

I heard that people hire GBCN students quicker than others due to the experience factor; you're likely to do more and see more with two extra semesters. There's a lot of opportunities to get involved and grow as a leader here, so I wouldn't change my decision if I had to do it over again. :)

Hope this helps and good luck with your decision.

Sorry that this is a little off-topic...I'm applying to GA Baptist for Fall 09 and if you don't mind me asking, what kind of gpa do you have in your prereqs? I'm not sure what they realistically require for admission.

Also, from what I've heard from nursing students/nurses, GA Baptist is the school that will prepare you the best out of any in GA and that it is very easy for their grads to get jobs because of this and because of Mercer's stellar reputation. Good luck to you!

From my understanding, they take a look at your GPA but it is not the only factor they look at, unlike some schools who soley accecpt according to GPA (so I heard). They look at the application and essay, involvement in or out of school, if you attend open house, everything! They want well rounded individuals who want to attend GBCN and will make them proud-outside of just getting A's.

I am a senior a GBCN and i have had a blast! The extra year goes by really fast and just like SanDgroovy said, you can also do fastrack. It is true about looking for jobs. About half of my class or more already have jobs with graduation still one month away ( yes!). I think its worth the money plus there are service cancelable loans that are forgiveable by working in the state of GA for X amount of years. Look into both. Weigh the pros and cons and listen to your intutition.
