Classes While Waiting...

Specializes in maybe L&D or NICU.

I haven't got my letter yet, but I am already freaking out about not getting in to the nursing program. Our competition is stiff and even with my 4.0 prereq GPA and overall of 3.86, there is a good chance I won't get in. :banghead: If I do not get in, what can I do with my time? I've been thinking of CNA or maybe medical transcription...anyone else done this? Best of luck everyone!!

I'm in the same boat. Out of the 3 I applied to, I've got one letter left to get and pray that is an acceptance letter (Chemeketa). I've taken a CNA class and have put off my state exam hoping to get in nursing in the fall but I might just schedule the test just in case....I see your from OR, where did you apply if I can ask?

It can't hurt to pursue your CNA in the meantime. Good luck to you.

Hi -

I'm a bit confused. If you have a 4.0, why wouldnt you get in? I have only taken 1 pre-req so far (taking another 2 in the fall) - but if I had a 4.0 in my pre-reqs I would think I would be a sure in.

I am getting nervous -- is it really that hard to get into?

Specializes in Critical Care.

I would say try to get into a Pharmacology class or a Medical Dosage class. Doing the CNA class would also be a big help if you have the time in your schedule for it.

I took the Pharm and Dosage class over the few semesters I was waiting to get in and I know it is going to pay off. I also tutored Anatomy and Physiology students for 3 semesters which was a great opportunity for me to retain all that wonderful material.

I would say try to get into a Pharmacology class

Awesome advice. Also try a pathophysiology class.

It depends on how the nursing school judges admission. Last year I had a 4.2 and didn't get in because I wouldn't finish my third term of A&P until the Spring and there were 15 admission points for finishing your prereqs before the end of Winter term.

Thankfully, I finished everything and got accepted this year :D

Peace,

Well I applied for the fall (my first time applying) and did not get accepted. Hopefully next time. I took my CNA already. I am taking more classes in the fall that will count towards my Bachelors if I decide to go that far.

Specializes in Cardiac Care.

I think Pathophysiology and Pharmacology are excellent options...

In at least a couple of the nursing programs in Oregon they go off a point system. If you meet their criteria for points then you MIGHT get a letter for an interview, then just maybe you'll get in. I know that is for Mt. Hood CC and Clackamas. I think Chemeketa has the point system also, but not real sure how theirs operates.

orcagrrl2003, have you looked into Clark College in Vancouver if you're from Oregon? I know 4 people who were accepted there only to decline since they got into the schools of their choice.

.... Last year I had a 4.2 and didn't get in ...........

Excuse my complete ignorance, but how do you get a GPA of 4.2? At my CC, 4.0 is the highest you can achieve. Is it that your school offers A+ as a possible grade? Ours only goes up to A. Congratulations, by the way, on an impressive GPA!

To the OP, I agree with those who say it depends on the school's system. My GPA was/is 4.0, and I had 34 credits completed with an A in every subject. Not enough! Because they use a points system, people got in with a lower GPA who had more credits. The only one applicant out of seven of my classmates (last term) who got in actually had over 60 credits!!! She had enough to graduate, for heaven's sake. Her GPA was high also, about 3.7 I think, and she's a terrific girl and a real hard worker. I was happy for her but pretty bummed for myself. Sigh.

Good luck!

LOL...that's exactly what it was I had a lot of A+'s which are worth 4.3....not a 4.0....and thank you :)
