is it just me or did anyone else experience negative
feedback after telling friends/family you were going to
school for nursing? everyone (except my mom:redbeathe) is telling
me that it's "too hard" and i'm not "ready to make that
type of commitment for school" at the end of the day,
i know what i'm capable of doing. this is something that
i feel passionate about. i'm motivated to do my best
throughout school and become the i dream of....
i just wish that more of my family/friends would support
my decision.
I'm not sure when I'll tell my parents. If school starts January 5, I'll probably tell them on January 4. LOL
You'd think I wouldn't care so much. I'm 33, married, and I don't remember asking their permission to get a degree in my first major, and that's back when THEY were helping pay for it. I guess I don't want to be reminded about how I've had a weak stomach my whole life. I think that is what school and experience is for - to help you get used to it. Plus I've always had more trouble with people talking about injuries more than I have about seeing them. For some reason, when people say stuff like "I mashed my finger," or "It nearly cut his hand off," it makes me sicker than if I saw it myself.
You are already aware that nursing school is tough, and you have already begun to show aptitude and determination, because you got into nursing school. There is such fierce competition to get into nursing schools that you have to be smart, tough and competitive. I think you will do wonderful, those doubters will see what you are made of. Think of it as a challenge. You will show them and think of how impressed they will be when you are an RN. Best of luck to you.
I'm sorry you dont have the support you need but we on allnurses.com support you 100%. My family thankfully is supportive but along the way I have lost my boyfriend of 3 yrs and a few friends because they dont understand that I have to study. I cant spend time hanging out. And even when we talk they feel threaten as if I think I am better than them because I am getting an education.:hhmth:go figure!! Guess they werent really friends in the first place.

well i didnt get any negative feedback at all, then again i have several family members who are nurses...
but my instant career switches and college choices have made my family uneasy about this major
i originally planned on becoming a veterinarian because i love animals but i cannot handle them being hurt (an internship at a animal hospital didnt help) and so i have always wanted to be in the medical field (and my mom has always thought so too, so thus she supports) so i decided to be a nurse, and i am liking it even more as i study and mature and grow to learn more things bout the field.
so i mean i would tell those people who dont believe or think that you are making a big mistake should can-it. because if it is your dream and your desire and it will make you happy with your job and life, then by all means GO FOR IT!
