Choosing a Stethoscope??NICU???

Specialties NICU

Discussion on another forum sparked my interest about choosing a stethoscope... My unit has many micro-preemies and also a large population of "larger" cardiac kids. Do you recommend getting an infant or a pediatric stethoscope? Some nurses like the pedi size while many others opt for the infant size... any input would be much appreciated.... thanks!!!

In mine too....

What sorts of things do you all find freddy the frog useful for?

Yes, I'm southern, thankyverrmuch. Hush up. I didn't hear you complaining when this belle sentcha some...um...sweet relief, so stop yer yappin', girlie. :D

I wrote to ChildMed just now; hope to hear what they have to say. I love them!

Often our difficult-to-soothe babies like the feeling of the weight on top of them; makes them feel more secure. We just pile 'em up right over the baby- I've been known to use more than one for the bigger kids and they just calm down and go right to sleep. You can also use them for positioning- as head, side, or foot braces to make the babies feel contained. If you roll a baby on their side, you can squish up a Freddy the Frog behind them and it keeps them in place (or use one on both sides). If you need foot bracing, you can place it under the feet. If you're trying to keep the hips aligned in a preemie, you can lay them supine and put one under their legs against their buttocks and use the little frog "arms" on either side of the hip. They're bean bags, so you can squish the beans on either side to fill up the "arms" and give support. If you go to the ChildMed site and click on Educational Programs they have two videos you can watch featuring their products on actual babies; the positioning video is the one with the frog in it, though I could have gotten much more creative than they did as far as uses go!

I'm such a fan of this company. They make the sucrose for dipping pacifiers in, they make preemie diapers (though I wish they made some that weren't plastic- breathable fibers like the Pampers preemie diapers that just came out would be fantastic!), positioning bumpers, etc. They sell starter kits also, so if your unit doesn't know what to use, you can buy one of the kits and it contains one of each of the most popular products.

We used to have scopes for each baby, but they kept walking out the door. I think we have been supplying the various peds offices around town with stethoscopes. Management decided we should all have our own, no more provided by the dept. A cost saving measure, of course.

Pampers and Huggies wouldn't MAKE those new premie diapers till they saw ChildMed make some $$$ off this market that they didn't think was big enough to bother with.

[don't get me goin' here!!! :D]

p.s. I sent an email, too. Feel free to go to childmed and write one, too!

My question was more related to what size to get, and what NICUNurse says makes a whole lot of sense to me.... Thanks everyone!!!

Hi, In our NICU we are not allowed to use our own, each baby has there own at the bedside for infection control. They were not the greatest but recently were upgraded.
