I am starting Chem II this semester. Anyone want to start a club???

Specializes in LTC, subacute CNA.
Okay, I had my chem test a few days ago. It was my first real test in 6 years since my first round of college. I know for sure that I got one question wrong. A simple conversion and I can't figure out for the life of me how to get the right answer. Here it is:

d= 3.12g/mL. Convert it to kg/L. I kept getting 3.12kg/L. I tried solving the problem several different ways. It was like being in a bad dream! Anyone up to solving that one for me? I'm sure I am just missing something obvious.

Fortunately I did well on everything else. Or so I hope. I'll find out when I get the test back next week.

Well, nevermind. I actually got that problem right. I was a nervous wreck all week about this test, and the teacher seemed displeased about the results- average was a 75. When I got it back today I was shocked. I'm still in shock. I got a 100. I've never gotten that on a science/math test in my life. I think I need to celebrate with a pint of Ben and Jerry's. And more studying, lol.

Hi,

I am amazed at how 'knowledgeable" you are in chemistry. I start mine in spring 2007. Could you please send me your chemistry notes and powerpoint files taken from your professor?

I need to get a step ahead in the class, since I;ll have a lot to do when the clas starts.

I really apprecaite it if you could help .

you could send them to my e-mail address [email protected]

Thanks

Lola

Maybe I should over a service where people can download some of my chem notes or Power point files taken from my professors.

Let me be honest with you... I'm am one of those guys that can memorize anything easily and do math problems in my head without every writing anything down....

But chemistry is different. Chemistry is the first and only subject (including other chemistry classes) that YOU MUST understand why things do the things they do. My first and second semester of Gen chem I spent more time studying for chemistry than all other subjects combined.

I could study for a political science or history test the night before for 2 hours (not really paying attention in those classes or taking notes at all). I'd study for statistics test the night before for 30 minutes. I'd study for A and P for two hours before the test.

The weeks of the third and fourth test in second semester I spent 16 hours each week studying, doing every pratice test question three or four times, not just memorizing the answer but working it out. Most other tests in chemistry I spent at least 6-8 hours of vigorous studying in addition to working the problems out over and over again. I also did all of this because chemistry is the first subject I fell in love with as it's the first to challenge me.

Out of my class of 46 (20 dropped out), only 2 As were given (I was one) but it's not an easy subject because there's not as much memorization as there is understanding. My professor also just came out with a 98% effective treatment for breast cancer, so he is a pretty smart guy.

Sometimes you need to google concepts so you understand them better.

I am so excited. I am getting an A so far. :) I almost went for my LPN because I was so afraid of Chemistry. Of course I am lucky because my teacher is very easy. We have only had 1 homework assignment, and 4 quizzes. The labs are very easy, and I have 100% on all but one of them. (He just hands us out sheets) We don't even need a scientific calculator. He says we are getting the Walmart version. I know some of you are hating me now. :) So far, we have learned about: Atoms, atomic mass, covalent compounds, Ionic/covalent bonding, polyatomic ions, balancing equations, stoichiometry, basics of moles, etc. We are having midterms in a week.

Good for you. are you in any chemistry club online here? I start mine next spring. Would you be kind enough to help me out. I have started reading some basics in the course, but it all seem like "magical fiction" to me, Never liked chemistry. My first class in high school- i broke a beaker, and never returned.

But I have to take it now in spring 2007, and hope to leave the beakers where they belong, and face my stuff but will need lots of help.

anyone taking chemistry in spring 2007?

Don't worry about breaking a beaker. It happens to many. Chemistry is much easier than it looks. If you open the book, you can get freaked. They build from the ground level up, and start with the definition of matter. Just make sure that you study what you need to. Some of the stuff is "magical fiction," but it is your job to just believe it. :) Soon you will be looking back at some chapters and saying "Dang, to the untrained eye that does look intimidating, but I know exactly what that means, boy, chemistry looks a lot harder than it is." Then you can open your book and impress "lay" people. You will do fine if you listen, take notes and study. You may actually enjoy it.

I didn't think I would like Chemistry and was very scared of it. I never took it in high school or college for my B.A. degree but I actually LOVE Chemistry. I am lucky to have an absolutely wonderful teacher who encourages questions, takes his time and explains things. I have an A+ average now and hope to keep it. Just take it one step at a time and you will do fine.

One thing I have learned as I try to read chapters before discussion. I don't get it until he explains things. So I just wait until class, read the chapter that we discuss, do the homework and it makes perfect sense.

So I just wait until class, read the chapter that we discuss, do the homework and it makes perfect sense.

That's what I do as well. I don't read ahead, I only read what he went over in class. If you don't quite get it in class, when you read that part of the book it makes more sense.

That's a good idea, I am in. By the way, can anyone help me with an Organic Chemistry question? I can't seem to find the answer to : What sugar is formed upon the hydrolysis of starch and cellulose? I have looked all over the internet. Even various chem websites and I could not find the answer. If anyone knows the answer please let me know. Thanks in advance.

I will be taking Chemistry in the Spring 2007 and I'm a little worried about it, I took Chem in high school and just barely passed, but this time I decided from the beginning I'd ask for help, so I asked a friend who just finished LVN school if she would tutor me so hopefully that will help...I've found so far that sometimes it takes someone else talking me through a course for me to truly grasp the concept and understand what I am looking at. I'm keepin my fingers crossed that I'll do well in the Chem. class.

It helps out to check out the chem teachers you're considering on ratemyprofessors.com. Avoiding the bad ones and finding a good one will make a huge difference!

Thanks EJM for the advice. I've decided I'm going make the best from the class.

Is anyone interested in starting a chemistry class club for spring 2007 students??
