Has anyone taken the clep for chemistry? If so, how long did you prepare for it? And did you get the 3 or 4 hours of credit? I'm thinking about taking this exam, but I'm kind of scared of it:o . Any advice?

Thanks everyone!

I would also like to know myself.

I just posted this same question in another thread and the answer I got was "I wouldn't do that if I were you..." from about 3 different people... I want to do this too but I'm not confident in my ability to study for it on my own...

The CLEP exams were originally designed for people with real life experience in a subject to test out of it and receive college credit for it. If you know your chem, study and then give it a shot. If not, I would think it'd be pretty tough to pass. I haven't taken it though, so I am just assuming.

Wise words :specs: If you have the time then go for it. The cleps are pretty cheap so you really won't lose that much if you do not pass. Get yourself some used books off of amazon or wherever and study your butt off. I find the incredibly easy series to be pretty much right on the mark with the subject.

You never know til you try.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I took the Chemistry CLEP in Jan 2002, 11 years after the last time I had stepped into a college Chemistry lab. (My college credits were "too old" to transfer by the standards of my ADN program.)

I called my alma mater and asked the bookstore what chemistry text they were using for Chem 115 (the beginning chem. course for science majors)....bought the text from somewhere on the internet (read: cheap!!) and reviewed in for about 2 weeks before the CLEP test.

I passed it easily because I had a good general knowledge of chemistry and only needed to review. I don't think I could have passed it if I went into it blind....without previous classroom education. Chemistry isn't exactly the easiest subject to learn on your own.

Before taking this CLEP, you should be able to work through the hardest 5-10 problems in each chapter review of a basic college chem. text.

Good Luck!!!

I clepped chemistry in london, uk last week. It was pretty hard for me. I got score of 45. I am not sure what is Excelsior College credit granting score but I assume it is over 50. So I hope I will do better next time.

Take care and good luck.

Heck, congrats on the 45 Steve! That's a lot better than I would've done. Best of luck for next time.

I wouldn't have gone all the way to London to take it though. :chuckle

Heck, yeah... a 45 is quite respectable. The chem cleps are supposed to be very hard.

Good Luck next time. Did you use much review material. If you do a search on Amazon for "chemistry clep", you never know what may pop up. Sometimes you will get reviews and such from people who bought books to prepare them for the cleps.

Good Luck

Hi,

I just signed up to answer this question. I had no chemistry background and decided to take the test so i studied for no more than 5 weeks. i picked up two chemistry books, one beginner and one college classroom text, and read them through the topics covered in the clep manual, which i also bought. i also ordered petersons 3 chemistry clep tests online. i ended up getting a 60, but my college only would give me credit for one semester of chemistry.

however, i would point out that it seems they give the same test and dont change it, so if u find someone whos recently taken it, they can give u an idea of the questions. however, i took mine months ago and dont remember a single one, i blocked out that bad memory. the biggest thing i noticed is that there were so many lab questions and that was not covered in any text i read, the clep manual questions and the 3 peterson tests didnt have a single one.

make sure u learn as much as u can about lab procedures. i mean like 20 out of 75 were lab questions, and it seemed simple but i had no lab experience whatsoever so they were all guesses. the test isnt hard, u can learn all that on your own, give urself 8 weeks and u should be prime, u can do it in 4 with no chemistry background even. good luck anyone who reads this. go for it cuz u have nothing to lose, if u dont pass u will get an easy A when u sign up for chem.
