Hi all,

Hoping to start a Chem study group for Spring 2008. I do not begin class until January 15th but figured I would see about getting a group together as soon as possible.

Howdy all. My gf is taking Chem and is struggling and I can't bare to see her like thisth this. I've read thru this entire thread and was wondering if anyone else can recommend something that I or she can do to help. So far it looks as if the best things include the Cliff Study Solver and these two links:

It doesn't have my book listed but there are others on there that have asked conversion questions, etc.

Great website to refresh on chemistry concepts, good easy method of explaining each key concepts and includes examples and such. I used it few years back but i think it'll help.

Oh and the use of the Z (I'm going to keep that for myself too, pretty handy!).

Can anyone else recommend something that may help her? I'm going to forward these things to her but was hoping for more stuff!

thanks allieinaz. good luck kristi1111. if anyone knows any tricks/hints/shortcuts, etc. for nomenclature i'm all ears. it's killing me. naming formulas is tough. especially remembering the polyatomics! my professor has no mercy and expects us to memorize everything! :bugeyes: my first exam is thursday afternoon and i'm freaking out here.

you are very welcome tlaspires2rn. i hope it helped. we are starting on nomenclature as well, so lets definitely help one another out. i'm going to include this part that i just read in the cliff study solver...i'm not sure how far you are into nomenclature but maybe it will help.

rule 1: the names of all binary compounds end in "ide" for example: carbon disulfide - cs2

rule 2: the elements are named in the order they appear in the formula, left to right.

rule 3: the number of atoms of exach element is indicated using numerical prefixes - 1=mono, 2=di, 3=tri, etc.

if you get a chance, stop by one of the book stores - borders, barnes and noble, and flip through this study solver. chapter 4 in the cliff's study solver goes over nomenclature and they appear to explain it pretty easily.

i had my first quiz tonite and i bombed! :o i feel soo stupid but i know i just need to study harder. i need a better plan. it was 5 questions - 3pt each - in 15 minutes. i know i only got 2 out of the 5 right. i made 2 dumb mistakes because of test aniexty and another was equations and i knew all the info but couldn't come up with the formula. i think if i had a little more time i would've figured out the 2 after going over them again. and when i called my dh he was soo unsupportive. i told him i needed to find some more time to study and his response was "good luck with that." :angryfire i've been studying often but i think i need some more length. like a block of studying on sun or sat. i'll have to figure out something with the housework, kids, and job. the thought even crossed my mind to quit my p/t job but we need the $.....

hang in there itsa.....it's only the first quiz. i'm sorry that dh didn't support you with a response that you really needed at the time. here's a thought but i don't know if it would work for you...have you tried to study at night when the kids have gone off to bed? there are some parents in different forums that have talked about doing this and it appears to be working for them. i actually work nights - 8pm to 8am and i'm able to study and retain pretty well...hope you'll be able to find a way to make it work for you. :w00t:

keep reading the posts on here. as i go through the class, i'll post things that my instructor gives us. she's really good at teaching and makes this class very bearable and entertaining. i'm actually liking my chemistry class better than my biology class...lol. who knew???!!

i had my chem class last night but she didn't have our tests graded yet so i don't know what i got.....sooo bummed...:icon_roll

i really want to know how i did...ugh....guess i'll have to wait and see if she will have them ready for wednesday....crossing fingers.

I need help! This is so confusing!

Q.) Using your knowledge of physical changes, you can separate the components of a mixture. If you had a mixture consisting of table salt (sodium chloride), sand (silicon dioxide) and ammonium chloride (NH4Cl), work out an experimental method that would separate each component while measuring their masses directly or indirectly. Use these properties of the components to help you plan:

Table Salt: Melting point: 801 degrees C; Solubility: 35 g will disolve in 100 g water at 100 degrees C.

Sand: Melting point: 1600 degrees C; Does not dissolve in water (insoluble).

Ammonium chloride: Sublimes at 350 degrees C; Does not melt, Solubility of 37 g in 100 g H2O at 100 degrees C.

Hopefully I'm understanding the question correctly......here's my shot at it...not sure if it's right though...

1. When you look at all three substances within the mixture, you'll notice that 2 of the 3 have melting points......2/3 have solubility....

I would first place the mixture in 100g of water and heat to 100 degrees C to separate the sand from the mixture.

This will separate the sand without affecting the physcial state of the sand.

2. I would then heat the water mixture that contains the NH4Cl and table salt. Knowing that NH4Cl goes from solid to gas (sublimination), you'll need to be able to catch the gas (this one is a tough one..lol).

I would think that with NH4Cl subliminates at 350 degrees you should be able to get the volume then be able to find the mass of NH4Cl of the mixture.....hmmmm.......

Table salt has ionic bonds, thus if you continue to heat it all the way through, the end result will be the cotents of table salt.

I have no idea if this even made any sense. That's a tough question that your teacher has you guys answering......at least i think it a tough on....

Anyone else out there have an answer?

So, I finally got my test back...i'm happy to report.....

Chem exam 1: 92% - Found out tonight, 2/11/08, that my instructor miscalculated....i actually got a 94% Woo hoo!!!

Bio exam 1: 96%

I'm actually enjoying chemistry. Studying last night gave me a headache though. All that _ide, _ate, _ite stuff is not gray matter friendly. Had to take a break and watch an episode of "Emergency!" (I'll memorize all these poly ionic compounds as long as I don't have to wear that stupid nurse's hat when I graduate lol)

I think the only thing that's truly frustrating is having an instructor who can't spell, can't do math, and who doesn't proof-read before handing out/posting assignments. One question cracked me up: How much of a given sample is left after 40 hours if the half life of the given sample's isotope is 12 years? Okay, I can do the math, no problem. Ohhh, she meant the half-life was 12 hours. Tiny bit of difference there.

lol....at least she's not typing out or writing out her coversations while lecturing in class....lol but i've got the same sometimes.

The instructor is great...by far the best i've had in all the years of schooling....but can definitely tell when she's getting tired. She's talking about something completely off subject while writing on the board for our lecture and right when she thought she was done, she looks over at what she wrote on the board and realized that she wrote out her entire conversation...LMAO!

But with assignments..helllllllo!!! They should be right...perhaps she has the same problem my instructor has?? lol.

Ha! That sounds like my instructor.

We had our first Chemistry test last night, and there were several typos and mistakes on it. Crazy! On assignments it's one thing, but on the test. Ridiculous.

It's okay, though. I think I did pretty well on the first test. The first for a new instructor is always the worst, because you don't know what to expect. There were a couple of questions that I wasn't sure about, and one where I just didn't have a clue and so I had to guess - something about enthalpy - but for the most part, I feel pretty good about it. Guess I'll find out next week when we get the test back.

I just started reading this thread today, I am not doing so well. We are in week 5 of 10 already and I have failed 2 20 point quizzes and 1 100 point exam...... My teacher just sucks! :angryfire We have subs for the next 2 weeks and they are so far so much better at teaching chemistry. I looked into dropping the course and retaking it next quarter BUT the only time that I would be able to take it has the same teacher, UGH! So I am looking to try to salvage my grade as much as I can. I have gotten all my lab points and he gives us extra credit(5 points at a time) for doing the questions at the end of the chapter. I have bookmarked the websites listed and also my library had the homework helper for chemistry so I placed a hold on it!! :yeah:

Ill keep checking in here for advice/help.

Congrats Allieinaz! That's awesome. I just got home from taking my 1st chem exam today. I feel pretty good about it, but we'll see sometime next week probably. Now, on to the Anatomy exam on Monday! Looks like an exciting weekend ahead!

I just started reading this thread today, I am not doing so well. We are in week 5 of 10 already and I have failed 2 20 point quizzes and 1 100 point exam...... My teacher just sucks! :angryfire

I am pretty sure I just bombed a organic chem quiz yesterday. It feels awful. I guess all we can do is just push on. I am going to have to make this class a priority in my life - which doesn't have much room for other priorities, but what can ya do? Half my class has already dropped. Our 1st big exam is next week. Rumor has it his 5 exams are all like finals. I am sure more will drop after that. I can't. This is my last transfer class and I must have it completed by June.

Have you tried to get a tutor? I signed up, but my school only has one O chem tutor and he is already booked. I did make it a point to go in and visit the professor during office hours. He is very nice, and seems reasonable - I just don't get this stuff! I wasn't great at general chem, either.

really glad that you came here and joined us! :specs: i'm sorry that you are having a rough time with your teacher. i really believe that it depends on who you have that will help you succeed. are you currently taking general chem or a higher level?

definitely doing the extra credit assignments will help you in the end, i believe. i hope that you'll continue coming back here and asking for help. i know that i just started with general chem but will try to help in anyway possible...good luck! :typing

great advice on the tutor! i agree with that definitely. i think as we start going on with the chapters, i'll need to sign up for a tutor as well. i know this sounds pretty basic compared to o chem but i'm having a difficult time seeing the difference between a heterogeneous mixture and a homogeneous mixture.....

the way my instructor stated was to think of a chocolate chip cookie....it's a heterogeneous mixture because you can "pick" the chocolate chips out.....huh????? lol.

anyway have a fabulous weekend everyone!!! remember....breathe.......
