Chem Spring 2008

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi all,

Hoping to start a Chem study group for Spring 2008. I do not begin class until January 15th but figured I would see about getting a group together as soon as possible.

Thanks for the "Z" scale for metric conversions. I am going to write this down and study it for my first quiz on Tuesday.

let me guess, reedy, delta college

I'm a little nervous right now....have my first chem exam tomorrow night. I just took a nap so that I could be up half the night tonight to study for the exam......(biting nails).

I really like this class so far and want to get an A on it...

Wish me luck!!

GOOD LUCK! I know this is going to be a hard class for me but I'm hoping if I do everything I'm supposed to that I'll get an A too. I have my first lab tonight and my first quiz on Mon. I've been studying as much as I can with 2 little ones and a part time job. Hopefully some of this is absorbing into my brain!

Ok...so the test is over.......(heart rate and breathing has returned to normal - and my nails still exsist..lol).

The test was ok. I think I did alright..will let you all know. I actually took till the end of the class to make sure I answered the questions correctly.....ya know review all the questions before leaving...

We had a question on the scientific method where we had to write out each step and define what each step meant...pretty easy right? I just about had a heart attack because that was when my brain went blank!:angryfire

I retraced back to checking again and by the time I got back to that questions...whew...it was back..lol.

We also had conversions, density, volume, metric system, calculations, etc on the exam. That's about all I could remember.

Anyway, just wanted to let you all know how it went and what type of questions were being asked on the first exam.

You must be glad it's over! I've been cramming for my test coming up on Tuesday :( Let us know how you did!

Also - I had a question for anybody - I'm having problems balancing equations quickly. I can do them, but with trouble and it takes awhile. Well, I only have 1hr and 30min to do the chapter 1, 2, and 3 test on Tuesday and I have to learn how to balance quicker! Does anyone have anything they use that works well?

Thanks!

I'm taking Chem I this semester. I'm in, too. :)

We have a test coming up this Wednesday. It's mostly the introductory terms and conversions and some of the other simple equations and stuff, so it shouldn't be too bad. I'm hoping for an A. We'll see, though.

Hi everyone. It is my first time posting on any of the boards. I am just starting my prerequisites and Chemistry looks like it's going to be tough. I'd love to be a part of your group.

Having said all that...is there anyone here who might know an equation for oxidation # of metal? Even an example would be great. This nomenclature is killing me! There seem to be some very "chemistry competent" people on here!

Best of luck to all of you who are plugging through chemistry right now. I sympathize with you. :o

I found this on a web site....not sure if this is what you are looking for...but worth a shot.

Chemical reactions of the elements

Reaction of iron with air

Iron metal reacts in moist air by oxidation to give a hydrated iron oxide. This does not protect the iron surface to further reaction since it flakes off, exposing more iron metal to oxidation. This process is called rusting and is familiar to any car owner. Finely divided iron powder is pyrophoric, making it a fire risk.

On heating with oxygen, O2, the result is formation of the iron oxides Fe2O3 and Fe3O4.

4Fe(s) + 3O2(g) → 2Fe2O3(s)

3Fe(s) + 2O2(g) → Fe3O4(s)

Well, I took my first Basic Chemistry quiz on Tuesday and got 100%!!!!!:yelclap: My quiz covered metric conversions, density, mass and volume, phases of matter, the scientific method and questions about temperature and heat mostly. I have my first Chemistry test this coming Tuesday which is over all of that plus our second chapter which discusses the periodic table and trends, physical and chemical changes, mixtures, solutions, and nomenclature. I have been studying hard!!!

I found a book titled Homework Helpers Chemistry by Greg Curran at Borders. He has an Internet website also. I have found this book very helpful so far and have been doing the review exercises.

I need all the help I can get. I just started intro to Chem. I'm in.

Thanks Allieinaz. Good luck Kristi1111. If anyone knows any tricks/hints/shortcuts, etc. for nomenclature I'm all ears. It's killing me. Naming formulas is tough. Especially remembering the polyatomics! My professor has no mercy and expects us to memorize EVERYTHING! My first exam is Thursday afternoon and I'm freaking out here.

I had my first quiz tonite and I bombed! :o I feel soo stupid but I know I just need to study harder. I need a better plan. It was 5 questions - 3pt each - in 15 minutes. I know I only got 2 out of the 5 right. I made 2 dumb mistakes because of test aniexty and another was equations and I knew all the info but couldn't come up with the formula. I think if I had a little more time I would've figured out the 2 after going over them again. And when I called my dh he was soo unsupportive. I told him I needed to find some more time to study and his response was "good luck with that." :angryfire I've been studying often but I think I need some more length. Like a block of studying on Sun or Sat. I'll have to figure out something with the housework, kids, and job. The thought even crossed my mind to quit my p/t job but we need the $.....
