Chem Spring 2008

Published

Hi all,

Hoping to start a Chem study group for Spring 2008. I do not begin class until January 15th but figured I would see about getting a group together as soon as possible.

Please count me in, I am in Intro to Chemistry this semester as well as A&P I and Human Growth & Development. Need all the help that I can get. Thanks for starting this study group. Can anyone tell me the easiest way to learn and remember conversions? Thanks Tai

Can someone help me with electron level arrangement? I think this is supposed to be soo simple but I don't get it! Any knowledge to share or a link? Thanks!

The Group an element is in (not counting the transition metals) tells you how many valence electrons an element has.

The Period an element is in tells you how many energy levels an element has.

Thanks for the info - I need help with the 2s1, 2s2, 2p..... I have to figure this out because it seems like that's what a lot of what we're learning next is based on. I took a quiz last nite and I know I got that part wrong but we have our first test tomorrow and I'm trying to figure it out by then. My teacher is just horrible when you ask questions if you don't understand. I may have to find time for tutoring...:o

The coolschool is a great link, thanks. I'm seriously so stressed about Chemisry right now that I think I'm going to start looking for a program you can buy online that might help. I'm just not getting enough from class to keep up. Too much too fast. Has anyone ever heard of anyone using that "learn Chem in 24 hours" course? Yeah right, I know. Like I said...stressing here. Any suggestions? Anyone? In my defense, I did make a 96% on our first exam (73% class average). However, I think the material early on was pretty easy. Now, we are just into balancing equations and naming compounds and I am so lost and losing ground rapidly. :o

I'm right with you! I feel like if I don't grasp this now I will be too far behind!

I was out sick with pneumonia last week when our class went over this. I'm going to try and get notes from my classmate tonight at class to see if I can understand it......ugh....i'm so frustrated that i got sick. Even though i only missed one class, i feel like i missed 2 weeks! I'm so lost.

Will let you guys know how it goes tonight in class and hopefully i'll be able to catch up with everyone.

One of my favorite review sites is the Sparknotes site:

http://www.sparknotes.com/chemistry/

They tend to explain things with just enough detail, in clear language.

As for the compound naming and equation balancing, you're right -- you *have to* get that down pat, because it's going to follow you around all semester. :) The only way to get comfortable with them is to do lots of practice problems until you're ready to barf :barf02:the next time you see one! I did so many last semester that when my current prof asks us to name compounds he writes on the board, I almost giggle because the names just automatically come to me.

Here's a nice interactive Chem problems page:

Here's another site where you can practice creating balanced compounds and naming them:

http://www.dupuis.shawbiz.ca/chemical_formulas.htm

Here's a link to the practice worksheets of Mr. Guch Explains, one of my fave sites for quickie answers to Chem concepts:

Another wonderful site that I haunt is General Chemistry online. Here's a link to his compound-naming page:

http://antoine.frostburg.edu/chem/senese/101/compounds/index.shtml

And here's a page where he helps you learn all about orbitals:

Hope this helps!

I got my first Test back and I got a 93 percent (no extra credit offered) so I pleased. i made some really stupid mistakes on the 7 points I missed and I should have done even better because I KNEW the information.

Im taking two chemistry's so my next test is tonight for the other class this on is much harder.

Congrats on your score!! Hope your other test went ok.

I'm stressing so badly right now all. I have so much on my plate this weekend that all i want to do is run to the corner of the room and hide...and cry! ugh!!!

On top of trying to get better (had pneumonia), I'm in the process of moving to the campus, working full time, and studing for a bio and chem exam next week.

I had planned on taking vacation during this move but because i got sick i had to use up my vacation time then.....60 hours..ugh! so not happy. Anyway, i need to vent, hope you all don't mind. I figure, next weekend...it'll get better. The move will be done, the exams will be over and hopefully i'll have most of my stuff in order at the new place.

Speaking of the new place, it's small. Not what i was hoping for but it'll have to do inorder for me to be able to save money in the long run. I'm trying to make it so that I don't have to work as much if not at all during nursing school. Scraficies, right?? wah!!

Hope everyone has a good weekend!

I hate my teacher...just hate him...i've tried to deal but he is unworkable. Weds we had our 1st test. In the middle of it the fire alarm went off so we had to leave. He told us all to go home because we'd just be outside talking about what was on the test so he'd have to figure out what he was going to do. So I get an email last nite that he came up with some system for grading what was done and I got an F. I'm not sure how because I really feel that I had done well with what was done. I think that because I did page 1,2,3 but skipped 4,5 and then did 6 that he counted 4,5 as wrong. I'm not sure, but we have another quiz on Mon and then a vote to see if we take another (more difficult) test to replace the first or do lab. If I drop I will get no money back and a W so I feel it's best probably just to continue and do my best up until the last drop date but I'm not sure if I'll ever get what he's teaching. Chemistry is not a required class for my program but I fear if they see a W then it'll send a red flag. I am previously a all A's and 1 B student so I cannot accept failing. :o And I'm sick and my baby's been sick for 2 weeks and my Grandpa's doing poorly after being hit by a car - This is not a good start to the new year - I need some positive vibes...

That is ridiculously unfair. The class, as a class, should go to him about this and suggest he administer another test. Certainly he has something from previous semester. Perhaps students can choose to take a second test or stick with their first. If he won't work with that, then I would go to the division dean about it. If the instructor or dean is not willing to make any concessions, you may be able to request that you are able to drop the course without taking a W - especially if the date recently passed. This is such an unusual circumstance, no one should be penalized.

Good luck.
