Nurses Professionalism

Not sure if this belongs here but, what do you do when a better job opportunity arises? Being recommended by a peer to new, better paying job was great. I have no problems with my current job. The new jobs needs me right away and the new schedule is the same as my old one. I told my current DON and she wished me luck, I also stated I wanted to stay part time. But with the way it looks I won't be able to commit. I don't want to quit outright, but this new job needs the position filled yesterday. Is it bad for me to quit and leave them scrambling? I can't eve give 2 weeks notice. Someone said it's the fault of my new job for not being prepared, but their in the same boat, the old nurse is moving. Feel bad.

You will burn bridges by not giving at least 2 weeks notice. It is not your problem that the new job will be in a bind. The new job should respect you for not leaving your current job high and dry.

I also recommend outright quitting the old job if you know you cannot follow through with working part time or PRN.

It's too bad your new employer is in a bind but how does it help to leave your old one in a bind? Is it your responsibility to bail out the one at the expense of the other?

Your loyalty should be to your current employer. Do the right thing because it's the right thing to do. Your new employer can figure out how to get through the next 2 weeks; at least they have someone lined up. Your current employer doesn't even have that. Give them their 2 weeks.

I agree.

The new employer is showing a lot of disrespect for your old employer by demanding this. It shows a lack of ethics on their part. Be aware of that.

It is never a good sign when a job is in such a need for you to start that they are okay with you leaving your previous job without at least a 2-week notice. I also think that you owe it to your current job to give them a 2-week notice especially since your current DON is already so understanding. I hope you figured it all out. Good luck!
