Just wondering what some of you all think of a situation I find myself in. So, I have almost 1 year on my current unit. My manager wants me to work as relief charge nurse part of the time because of staffing needs, one coworker will be on leave for 3 months. I agreed.
However, a job in the ER recently became available which is where I've always wanted to work and I'm afraid to pass up the opportunity, but at the same time, I like my manager and my unit and I don't want to ruffle any feathers. I care about our unit and the staffing, but I don't want to work on the floor anymore. Should I just wait for another opening at a better time?

I'm actually in a very similar situation. While it's admirable that you're considering the staffing needs of your current unit, you have to think of you and your family first. If your manager is good, she will understand and not hold it against you.

Apply for the position and see if you are offered it, you may not be offered it, or you may be offered the position with the condition that your start date be postponed until adequate replacement for your current position is found.
