Big change in plans for me...I orignally was set to possibly start nursing school this fall for an ADN program. It was not guaranteed because it was late application period, but I figured I had a nearly perfect GPA and had a great chance of getting in. I needed to take one more class. Needless to say, it was an online class, and I didn't do as well as I wanted to in it do to other circumstances, so I decided to drop it. I had planned on retaking it for the second summer session, which would have pushed me back to applying for the Spring '09 semester.
Yet if I was to apply for the Spring 09 semester I would have to retake one class that only has a one year time limit and I took it last fall. I recently was looking into BSN programs and realized I can start nursing school for my BSN in Fall 09. I have one more class to take in order to be able to apply, and I will have all of the pre-req classes done by the end of next Spring in order to start my BSN program next fall.
I feel like it makes more sense for me to wait it out one more semester to wait to start my BSN program than just starting an ADN program a semetser before.
Am I right for making this decision? Is there anyone else who recently changed their mind about going for an ADN program and shooting for a BSN program?
I feel kind of weird because my friends have already started in their ADN programs and will be RNs before me, but I would like to go to medical school eventually and I would like to have my BSN for something to fall back on.
Sorry this is so lengthy, just looking for some advice and comments! Thanks!

This is just my opinion, but if medical school is what you really want, go for it. Nursing is not a stepping stone to medicine, nor should it be considered a backup plan. There are too many people dying for spots in programs who want to make nursing their lifetime career. We need nurses who are in it for the long run!!!!!!!

A BSN is not great prep for med school. You'll need a lot more science. If you want to go to med school, consider majoring in chem or bio.
I feel it is. I understand that nursing and medicine are two different things, but all in all it is still HEALTHCARE! Technically, you do not need to be Pre-Med or Bio to apply to medical school. You can have a baccalurate degree in pretty much anything, as long as you have your sciences of the such as Chem, O-Chem, Physics, and Bio-Chem. I am not going to waste time retaking classes for Pre-Med or Biology degree, when I have taking most of my classes for a nursing degree anyway. I have had to considered taking the rest of my classes for such as Chemistry needed for my BSN for science majors, in case I do decide to go to medical school. Also, I say back-up because if I do not decide to got to med-school, I would already need my BSN to apply to a CRNA school. So please don't sit here and talk down to me like I don't have the right to study ans learn what I want to for my personal reasons!
Yet that was not my question and I don't appreciate people telling me I am wasting a seat in nursing school because I may consider in the future going to medical school. I'm not wasting a seat! I want to be a nurse! I feel nurses show the most compassion for their patients, spend the most time with their patients, and give the most care for their patients. Many doctors don't give that and that is one reason why I feel that could possibly be a good stepping stone into becoming a doctor by experiencing being a nurse and being in a nurses shoes! Yet, I feel as if many people on here are not showing their compassionate side, or calm side and are talking down to others like we are children. It comes across as rude, and somewhat bitter. I studied my but off for the past year to get into nursing school and just because I have possible future aspirations to be an MD doesn't call for a waste!
My question was if any other students have recently switched from doing orginally doing ADN to doing BSN! Thanks.

modelmama, there is absolutely nothing wrong with becoming a nurse and deciding to futher your career if you choose to do to so....the only way to know if something is for you is to try it.....who knows you might just find your niche and if not the sky is the limit and don't let any one tell you anything different or deter you from your dreams..... i have friends who are nurses who furthered their education to become np's midwives etc.......having experience is in the medical field is grand....do what you want to do;only you decide your destiny...... good luck to you.

Your plan of doing the BSN one semester behind makes waaaay more sense than doing an ADN program one semester ahead. Think of it this way: if you are an RN already and you go back to school to get your BSN (since you have aspirations to continue education for your career), would it take a semester to finish that BSN? Probably not. Especially with your stellar grades, I don't see why you would chose otherwise. Good luck with your future aspirations!!!

I concur. I am second degree student, got in to the local CC program Fall'08. After reconsidering my options, i.e. time, money, school resources, reputation, schedules; I have decided to defer and complete the 3 classes needed for the University BSN this Fall instead.
Then, I can apply to both programs for Spring '09 start with the BSN being my preference. If I get in it will save me a year, a few bucks, and I'm really looking FW to the cool specialty electives I can choose from. Plus, I can get a job/reimbursement benefits from the affiliated big city medical center.
Look at the options, but I think waiting would be a fine idea.

I was somewhat in the same boat as you.. somewhat.
I got accepted into a ADN program at a community college and a BSN program at a private university that would start around the same time as one another.
The ADN program is much cheaper but I decided to go into the BSN prog because of the prestige that the school had. A lot of people thought this wasn't the smartest thing to do. But, I knew I probably wouldn't have the time or even want to go back to school to obtain my BSN while working as a ADN nurse. When I look at my loan statements I cringe but I know I'm getting great experience and top-notch schooling in the BSN program. I always wanted to be a nurse but I also considered furthering my education and going on to optometry which requires only a Bachelors degree in any field to enter the doctorate. Not quite sure when and if I will still do this... don't let comments discourage you.
The BSN pre-reqs might transfer over to your pre-med classes and if you decided to go ADN and ended up liking it enough to stay a nurse you would likely go on to get your BSN anyway, as many hospitals and specialties are trending this way. Don't worry about your friends... they'd probably get their BSN anyhow.. and it would take way longer for them to do this.

I originally was planning to get my ADN, but since I want to go for my MSN as soon as I can, the BSN made more sense to me. Because I already have a bachelor's degree, I could have had an ADN in 2 years or a BSN in 2 years. The BSN just made more sense in my circumstances.
