Hello!
I will be moving to Arizona next spring in 2015. I have been an accounting professional for the last 6 years and finally have decided to pursue something I enjoy! I'm really nervous about this step in my life but it needs to be done!
I was looking at the CEP Requirements from Maricopa and ASU.
Can someone just confirm that these are the only prereqs I need for my GPA and admission? I have been trying to reach a Nursing Advisor but have had no luck. I keep going through to the voicemail.
In the brochure they list the following as prereqs and coreqs for MaricopaNursing:
First Year Composition (ENG 101 & ENG 102)
Chem 130, 130LL
PSY 101
BIO 201 and BIO 202
Bio 205
Then they mention additional ASU prereqs:
Human Pathophysiology - HCR 240
and College Math (MAT 142 or higher).
After that it mentions an additional 7 credits of Upper Division are required.

[TD]An additional 7 credits of Upper Division (SB with C and/or H; and SB or HU with C and/or H) are required. These are not prerequisites but completion is highly recommended prior to entry in program.

What classes is this referencing?
Any guidance will be much appreciated!!

Hi there! Congratulations on taking a new and big step in your life!!
The pre-reqs for the CEP programs differ depending on if you choose NAU, ASU or UofP. I am going through NAU and was just accepted to the program but I am familiar with the ASU and UofP routes too.
The community college (Maricopa nursing) requirements are:
ENG101*, ENG102*, CRE101 or test exempt from it, CHM130 & 130LL*, MAT120 or higher, PSY101 or PSY240*, BIO201*, BIO202*, BIO205*, humanities elective (I took HUM250).
After you complete CHM130/130LL, BIO181, BIO201, PSY101, and MAT120 or higher, you can get on the waiting list through Maricopa Community Colleges. You do need to attend a nursing program information session first. They will give you a code which you need in order to get on the waiting list. You also need to have passed the HESI (the Nursing Entrance Exam) with at least an 85% in English Composite and 75% in Math. You also need to have a DPS Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card. After you have done all of this and got on the waiting list, register to attend the CEP Information session. Then begin on the next classes. After you have completed all required classes, you can register to attend a CEP Application session. All classes have to be completed in order to apply for the CEP program.
Additional ASU requirements are:
HCR240* & MAT142 or higher*.
So you would need to take all of the above classes in order to apply for the CEP program. The stars indicate which classes are used to calculate the minimum GPA of 3.25 you are required to have in order to apply.
The additional 7 credits of Upper Division that the brochure mentions I BELIEVE is the same as NAU, where it is satisfied by an AGEC (Arizona General Education Curriculum) which you can get when you are eligible for an associates of art degree. This is what I did. When I applied for my associate’s degree, I also applied for the AGEC. That AGEC certificate satisfied NAU’s additional cultural/global credit requirements, much like ASU requires. I would HIGHLY recommend speaking with an advisor at whichever community college you are planning to attend and they can map out the classes you should take each semester in order to maximize your time. I say this because certain classes satisfy multiple credit requirements, such as your cultural and global requirements. I took two classes that each satisfied two credit requirements. It saved me time, classes, and therefore, money!
Also, I noticed that you are from out of state. I'm not sure if you are beginning the courses when you move here but if you start them out of state, check with the colleges out here in AZ to ensure your credits will transfer so you are not wasting any time and money!
Let me know if you need anything else or if you have other questions. I would be happy to help! :)

I think you touch base on everything AZMama86:)
Thank you so much!! That information is really helpful. I actually moved from Arizona about a year ago to Georgia and it just so happens to be my husband and I have decided we loved Arizona and we're ready to call it home :)
I was registered as an instate student at Rio Salado when I was there. Unfortunately, that status no longer holds true, but I plan on taking my classes online with Maricopa and i'll just have to absorb the out of state cost!
At some point I was hoping to get in touch with someone regarding my resident status and see if they have other options available. I highly doubt it.
Once again, thank you so much for the detailed response. I'll be sure to reach you if I need any additional information!
I just realized you said there's a waiting list. Approximately how long is this waiting list for? I was reading for some Maricopa programs it's as backed up as 2 - 3 years? I'm hoping that doesn't apply for the CEP?
Once you get on the Maricopa nursing waiting list they say it is about 203 years wait. If you get on the list and finish your classes you can apply for the CEP BSN program there is not waiting list they go by GPA and HESI scores. Just keep up the good grades and you should have no problem. I did 4-5 semester of classes and just applied and got right in the CEP. Good luck.
Thanks!
Some more questions that I wanted to ask an advisor but I might as well ask here, if you don't mind.
Do you know if this program allows you time to carry a full time job? Does this program have clinicals/rotations?
The program does have clinical rotations. I really think it depends on you if you want to work or not. School is a few days a week and then you have lab times and then clinical's and studying. For me it would be hard but I'm going to try to do part time and see how it goes.
I should have clarified that. There is a waiting list for the regular RN program through the community colleges. You have to be on the waiting list for that before you can apply for the CEP programs, which is what you're interested in. Once you apply for the CEP program, if you are accepted, you begin that program within a few months. so you essentially skip over the waiting list. Like scrubgirl said, the waiting list for the regular program is 2-3 years. I got on the waiting list October 2011, and was placed in December 2013 to start in January, but I chose to defer (which you can do one time). I applied for the CEP a few weeks ago and was accepted to that so I will start that in Spring 2015.
As for the working... I remember at the nursing information session years ago that they recommended with the regular non-CEP program that you do not work full time. I personally cannot imagine working even part-time while doing the rigorous CEP program. I know there are definitely people that need to work though. We have 4 kids and thankfully we can survive on my husband's income. If I had to work, I personally would not do the CEP program. As scrubgirl said, you have lab times, clinicals and studying.. so you will need to see if you think you can work through all of that or not. I don't see how there are enough hours in the day to do full time... I have the tentative schedule for Mesa and it's M-Thurs, a few days until about noon-130PMish depending on if you take extra classes, and a few days until 330PM or later depending on where/what time your clinicals are.

This is great info and answered some of my questions as well. I just got my timestamp for the maricopa nursing program, 6/06/2014 08:00:53am. From what I understand that means I was number 53 out of this group who applied this period. Kind of discouraging thinking of having to wait years to start school, but looking into the CEP looks promising. I know the feeling of trying something new, a career change here too.
Definitely look into the CEP program and if you are interested, start the classes! It'll shorten your wait if you can get the classes done in a few semesters because you can start the program right after you apply and are accepted to the CEP! :)
Yes that time stamp means you are #53 out of the just the group that applied during that application period.
All I have to finish for the CEP application is the microbiology and the human pathology classes. So not too much to finish up on, and probably take the HESI again as I did not have to take the anatomy section for the maricopa nursing application.
