Cell Phones in Class?

Published

So, I was wondering what everyone's school policy is on cell phones in class. We are not allowed to bring cell phones into the Nursing class, Lecture or Lab. If your phone rings while you are in class, you get sent home for the day.We also can not have our phones on us in clinical, which makes sense.

I have seen in my other classes (math, computer, etc) people texting on the phone, surfing the internet and other things. Do you find this distracting? Are most schools the same way, Just wondering.

Thanks;)

As the person in the front of the room, I find cell phones annoying and distracting. Don't let it ring in my class, and don't jump up and run out (disrupting everyone) to answer it.

I have had students let me know ahead of time they have a sick kid, or something going on. They put it on vibrate and sit by the door to be able to slip out. So, no problem.

But to sit there on the 4th tier giggling while texting under the table (hello, it is tiered seating, you think I can't see you?) is rude. I stopped the class. Listen, if you don't want to hear what I have to say, if you don't think what I teach is important to your career, why are you here? From the ICEs I get back, I don't think I'm that boring!:lol2:

We're not supposed to use cell phone or have them on during class - but you know, that doesn't seem to stop certain select few. It doesn't really distract me, unless they are right behind me and I can hear their little fingers clicking against their keys. That's when I want to turn around and break someone's phone in half and chunk it at their face (), but thankfully, it doesn't seem to be much of a problem in my classes. I don't think many can afford to text through class, unless they really aren't taking their Nursing Program seriously.

We are required to use an app called UnboundNursing. It gives us access to Davis' drug guide, Tabers dictionary, etc.

I just saw this...thank you!

My nursing program starts in a few weeks. In pre reqs , we were technically not suppose to have our phones on or out in class although the instructors I had were pretty lenient about it. It was very distracting at the beginning of the semester! but as thosestudents usually had to drop because they were failing  it wasn't much of a problem further into the semester . I doubt it will be a problem from nursing students as it's a competitive program so we are all pretty "type A". We are required to have either a smart phone or iPod like device and a list of Apps. We are suppose to keep the smartphones in "airplane mode" while in clinicals effectively disabling their actual phone capabilities.
