I really wouldn't have much use for a cell phone at work. I do have a school provided walkie-talkie that works campus wide. I suppose I would use my personal cell phone if we had to evacuate the site, but hopefully, that is such a rare occurrence that it's not worth the school providing one.
I have my cell phone on me at all times. My thought with that is that if there were a true emergency, a call to 911 could be immediate and made in my presence (or i could make it myself right away if i were alone). The number of times that;s happened has been few and far between but it doesn't change my practice.
I don't think it merits the school providing me a cell phone, i just don;t want to hear any flack for carrying it because i think that's a legitimate reason - and i don't take personal calls unless on my lunch.
The average US school nurse has 2.2 schools (NASN, 2007). The nurses with multiple schools often are expected to stay in touch during transit from one school to another.
That makes sense. I guess I am just lucky because I am only in one school. In that case, it would definitely be a good idea for the schools to provide phone. In my district all of admin. are provided with iPhones. The nurses really don't need them, though.
Yes, I am expected to have my personal cell phone for work as well...what I have found helpful is only the supervisor and secretary have my number. If a school calls (there are 21 schools in my district) and needs me while I am away from the office, the boss or secretary can reach me on my phone and give me the message. Remember you can claim your work-related calls from your phone as a work expense on your taxes if you can keep a close record and do the math at tax time!:)
