CCRN for CRNA?

Nursing Students SRNA

Published

I completely understand what a CCRN is, and the clear benefits it endows upon the Critical Care RN who may hold such certification. However, is there any benefit for a CRNA to become certified as CCRN; or is it implied that a CRNA has at least as much knowledge base as a CCRN? Since the CRNA in an APN with critical care experience, and a full comprehension of the vasoactive gtts, vent managment, pathophysiological processes related to critical care nursing, etc., it seems like there is not much use for CCRN certification once CRNA status is obtained? Is this a misunderstanding on my part? Certainally, I respect critical care nurses (being one myself), but as an aspiring CRNA with a fairly clear understanding of the intellectual demands of the job, I'm not sure I see CCRN as beneficial to CRNAs? Of course, it would be to someone who was not accepted yet to CRNA school. But for a CRNA, it seems to be redundant? I'm really sorry if I'm way off on this -- and I certainally don't want to offend. Just trying to determine whether I should take the CCRN exam (for which I was studying) before I start my CRNA program in September. Thanks for your input!

Specializes in I know stuff ;).

hey melissa

The way i look at those exams is that they never hurt. I have taken 3 so far (CEN CFRN CCRN) and they all helped me clinically in one way or another. However, once i start CRNA school i dont anticipate having the time to recert or get the CEs needed to maintain them all.

So, if you have the time b4 starting CRNA school, i say go for it. Once in, your focus will be totally different.

What do the post grads think?

If you've already been accepted, HELL NO!!!!

Why waste the money for something that is going to be of no real good to you. Your going to learn patho on a far greater level than what you would prepare for for CCRN. Don't do it.

My advice, if you are already accepted to school, stop studying and party instead, better yet, sleep!!! If your dying to read something, make it anesthesia related.......................

I agree! If you are already in don't worry about that exam. You are going to learn more in ansethesia school than the CCRN exam could ever teach you. Enjoy life for now! If you are going to read something anesthesia related make it a fun anesthesia read, not technical. You will get enough technical in school and after you are finished for the rest of your career. I suggest reading "watchful Care". It's the history of america's nurse anesthetists. A good read.

Ditto the previous three posts.

I recently passed the CCRN. My reasoning for taking it was 1. a lifetime achievement designation in the field of critical care. 2. a way to distinguish myself from others that didn't have it who are applying. 3. some programs suggest and or require it if you have to reapply. 4. It is a good review of possible questions or scenarios that could be posed in an interview. 5. If I didn't get in I am still going to be in critical care and it can be used for future postions or clinical ladder.
