Hey!
Is anyone applying for the RN program that starts Fall 2011?
I'm going to apply for South. Last I checked, they didn't have the application packets yet. I hope they get them soon! Do other campuses have them?
It would be great to get some discussion started. Thanks everyone!
buy a stethoscope.mine was like 20 bucks on amazon but if u hav a littmann by all means it deff great to have! i think ill force myself to buy one after nursing school...DO not do any of the needed certifcations or clearances YET!!! i did this last year trying to get a headstart and they wouldnt take em bc they need to be EXTREMELY recent. so my advice with all this said: DO not try to start ahead of the game bc you will have plenty of time, jus b patient prepare yourself mentally and take a breath. i know its overwhelming at 1st but just wait-the 1st couple weeks r rly overwhelming...
btw the needed nursing tote runs over 100$ so SAVE YOUR money$$$$ this summer! between all the clearances, scrubs, shoes, stethoscope, books, parking permits, nursing tote, believe me YOU R GONNA NEED IT! if i could go back in time i would save as much as i could bc whatever you dont use on all the stuff i listed youre might need to work less during school so it will b nice to hav extra $ to fall back on....
buy a watch-BUT must have a second hand!!!! dont forget about this bc you need it to take bp and HR...you will need like 3 of the rly large binders that have the 3holes in it. i get mine from walmart whne school stuff goes on sale..one for lab and one for lecture and one for clinical.....i seperated all my class things like this. you will hav different teachers for all 3 so its good to keep it all together but seperate from eachother. i had a clinical bag full of all the stuff ONLY for clinical. the other bag had all my lab work in and lecture in other one...they wont tolerate u forgetting things
:idea:im trying to list everything that would b any importance to ya guys that i can think of....
I WISH THEYD EXPLAIN THEIR PROGRAM A LITTLE BETTER...but they dont unfortunatly and somethings youre gonna ask yourself, why??? why did i do that??? or why didnt i do that??? lol but itll b okay..
i recommend when you get your booklist to search for the "workbook" that goes with each version. like the studyguide book, they usually rly r helpful. wait til u c booklist, horrible! so many...and theyre all huge!:twocents:
there is a nursing grant available that they will giv more info on sometime thru semester-I strongly encourage u to fill that paper out and write your one page essay on "why you should get this and what you'd use the money for"...as soon as u possibly can. some ppl didnt mail theirs in and didnt get it which was unfortunate.
its like 1500$ per semester for the 1st year...u hav to meet certain qualifications but this helped me tremendously with books, gas money, anything i needed to get to school and do a great job..
Rebecca6890... WHAT WOULD WE (newbies to nursing 101) DO WITHOUT YOUR WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE! Thank you for the heads up and ideas of what to do, handle and prepare for. Your advice on waiting for the instructions on what to buy is a great idea. I am anxious and ready to go get the supplies now, but waiting to make sure I buy the CORRECT items will be beneficial in the end. I hate returning things, and CCAC does not give 100% refund.
Sewnmom... Good luck in your studies and PAX test for the upcoming semester. You've come along way and glad you are not giving up!

A few quick questions rebecca6890
One of my nurse friends gave me some books in the small reference type.
Included are:
RNotes pocket guide
Clinical handbook for Medical Surgical Nursing:Critical thinking in Client Care (3rd edition, booklist says 4th edition)
Handbook of Nursing Diagnosis (11th edition - booklist says 13th edition)
NDH Pocket Guide tto Drug Dosages (3rd edition - booklist says 3rd but this is a pocket version)
Do you think I might luck out and be able to use any of these?
Luckily she also gave me a Littman Stethoscope.
KH321... Hang in there you can pull up your grade, stay positive and focused. You are smart and determined and come this far! A wish for luck is appropiate, but a heartfelt "go kick some finals test butt" is meant! :rckn: Keep us posted...:hgu:
ps.. this is not related to our nursing thread, but I love adding the smilies!
Sewnmom... CONGRATS, that is the hardest part i think is passing that PAX test! Speaking of overwhelming, I guess I am reading the thread wrong... so you are in the program this fall? I need to get some coffee...
But it sounds like you already have a handle on the books and are very prepared. I have heard the littman is worth the $$. Maybe that is the one thing I can buy ahead of time.

dont buy a pen light. you will need to buy the nursing tote and it comes with all the things needed for lab (cath kits, dressing kits, ivs, bp cuff etc). the books for nursing alone will cost atleast 500 and thats probably jus getting the "most needed". they giv u the book list and its like 13 books and yes every semester theres another book list...dont think nursing school is cheap watsoever. dont buy scrubs bc they MUST have the CCAC embroidered on them. u dont want to have to exchange them. and they must b navy blue. yes buy ALL white shoes, nothing on them.....and......
