Carolinas College Spring 2015 Matriculation

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

I was wondering if anyone on here is anxiously awaiting their Carolinas College Nursing program admissions letter for January 2015 Spring matriculation? I believe they begin sending out letters next Wednesday (06/25/14) and I am so excited!

Does anyone know if the school calls students who are admitted on Wednesday? Or if we must wait for snail mail letters :)

I was also wondering if you are not accepted, how much information Carolinas College will divulge about why?

Congratulation on your Graduation! I was wondering how did you prepare for nursing school? I am nervous. I start there in January, if you do not mind me asking. RunnerRN2014

I will also be starting in January and would love to hear any advice you have!

Honestly, there is no way to prepare. LOL If you're having to take A&P, micro, etc with your nursing classes be prepared to feel completely overwhelmed, at least at first. The instructors are AWESOME and prepare you for everything you need to know. Don't be afraid to seek help from them or Nancy in the Student Success Center. EVERYONE at the school wants you to succeed! Join at least 1 organization; it's a great way to get to know people further along on the program who will be willing to pass along study guides, notes, etc. You can also find people to swap textbooks with so you're not having to buy them for every class. (Which reminds me....my peds and maternity books haven't been returned yet LOL) From day 1, STUDY every day. Study the lecture from that day's class. Pre-read the lecture for the next day. You don't need to read the textbook word for word; in fact, you may not need to read the textbook at all. All classes provide you with a set of power point notes that usually cover everything on the tests. There is a closet at school (Joy at the front desk has the key) where people donate their school scrubs so you may find what you need without having to buy anything although some the tops tend to be a little on the dirty side since they're white. They're free so you might as well see if you can find your size and try to clean it.

Any other questions, please ask! :)

Thank you so much for the advice lol! I know this will be very challenging, but I am certainly up for the challenge.

Has anyone completed their CNA I / NA I class? If so, was it at CCHS?

I took my CNA there before I started. It's an easy class ( no need to study for the tests--very common sense information). Clinicals are at CHS LTC facilities like Sardis Oaks.

Just curious, after you took the class, where you able to get a job at the hospital?

There is an HR recruiter that comes to school once a month; she's a great resource to use in your job search. I tried on my own for a few months (and dozens of applications) before contacting her. She contacted 2 nurse managers. I interviewed for both and was offered both positions. I accepted a position at LCH and have been there since 2012. It will make getting hired after graduation so much easier!

That sounds really great! LCH as in the children's hospital?

I have so many questions for you, but the site will not allow me to send private messages :(

Yes, Levine Children's Hospital. Feel free to ask questions!

How long did the hiring process take? I heard CHS HR takes their time. I really want to be able to work while I am in school, since I will only be part time. If I get into the nursing program, I will only be taking the actual nursing classes, since I have already completed all the pre-reqs. If you don't mind me asking, does CHS pay well? What position do you currently have? My ultimate goal would be a PICU or NICU nurse.

I am just so ready to hear back about school, being on the waitlist is so nerve racking.

From the time I interviewed to when I started was at least 6 weeks. I'm PRN so I'm only required to work 24 hours (usually 2 12s) every 6 weeks. I try to work one shift every other week if I can. Base pay for an NA I (which is what I am) is around $10.00/hr. You get more if you work nights and/or weekends.

School is basically full-time. You're in class Mon/Thurs/Fri mornings, clinical prep Mon afternoon, and are in clinical all day Tues/Wed. Add to that clinical paperwork, class assignments, studying for tests, etc -- it's a lot.

As far as PICU and NICU -- you'll take a tour of NICU during your maternity rotation but you don't get to spend any time there. In peds we used to spend one day in PICU but now you spend a day in the peds ED instead. (It may change again so don't hold me to it!)
