Career Change==>Accounting to Nursing

Published

i have been an accountant for over 18 years now and i am just getting tired of all the office politics, laid off, long hours without pay, and staying all day on the computer. i also have my masters degree in business management. i am a people person and have a very strong passion for helping people. i possess a very strong interpersonal skills which i think would be a very strong asset in the nursing field.

in spite of the fact, i have no science background, i am more than ready to start from the onset. i know i might not make more initially, but at least i am able to meet people and be of help to others.

i planned to start taking my prerequisite in a local community college, complete my adn, take the nclex exam. i also plan to complete my msn after a year of clinical experience.

i need your advice. i am a little nervous over the whole thing. what are the pros and cons of nursing? what are the pitfalls to avoid why in the nursing program? does anyone have similar experience of changing career to nursing? if yes, how was it like?

please, i need you advice. thank you.

After 20+ years in nursing, I sometimes wonder how to get OUT! Talk about politics! Nothing can compare to hospital politics. Helping people is why one goes into nursing, but don't fool yourself into thinking the hospital isn't in it to profit, or at least survive. Your goals are not the hospitals.

I guess what I'm saying that the grass is NOT greener over here. We have all the same problems you have; and add the stress of enormous responsibility to that and you'll quickly wonder why you left 6 figures for nursing.

Think of all the excel programs piled up on your desk... now trade that idea with sick people. If you don't get to them, they could get sicker, or possibly die. It can be extraordinarily overwhelming work. Just make sure you really understand what nursing is really all about.

Well if you figure how to finance going back to school I know alot of people on here would like to know about. :)

Hello all,

I know this post is really old but I am so surprised to see everyone feeling the way I feel. I am so tired of accounting, have been doing it for about 6 years now and am finally ready to reunite with my first love - nursing. I googled nursing schools and trying to do some research on what nursing is all about. Can someone help me get started with going back to school and let me know how everything works? Not really feeling the online nursing program so if someone knows of good nursing schools in Georgia that would help too. Thanks!

Well I am going to try to keep this post going. I have been working in Accounting for 6 years. I recently completed my Associates in Business (June 2009) and was planning to continue my Bachelor's in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance, but first I took the summer off. When it was time to start looking at going back to school I knew I did not want to continue on this path. When I was 12 I volunteered for a hospital and LOVED IT, then when I graduated from High school my plan was to go to nursing school when my (now ex-husband) told me I wasn't smart enough to become a nurse, so I dropped that dream (should of dropped the husband!). Then I went to school to become an EMT and ended up not finishing because my ex-husband was shipped to Iraq and I have a baby to take care of and no support. Then 4 years later I knew I had to get my butt in school and Business seemed like the easiest and best thing to do.

One day, about 2 weeks ago, I had an epiphany and decided that I don't care how hard, or how long it took me I was going to do what I wanted to do in life. So, I made an appointment with the local college and I go to take my entrance exam tomorrow! :yeah:

When I told some of my collegues they were like "you actually want to do that?" And I honestly can't think of anything esle I would want to do more in my life. I am so tired of stressing for nothing! Stressing out for someone elses business, someone else's money! I am just so over it!

I have a long way to go, but my goal is to eventually become a Research Nurse for Pediatric Infectious Diseases. I hope all of the posters on this thread have succeeded in what they set forth to do! :p

I've been an accountant/CPA for 20+ years and I'm going back to school this fall for nursing. No sense doing something you no longer have a passion for. Life is too short!!

Congrats! I thoroughly agree with you that life is too short (to waste on something you're not passionate about). Dumping a 20+ year career is not easy, but neither is being miserable in an unrewarding job.

When I did my post on this thread, I was 3 weeks into an Accelerated BSN program. I am just finishing my new grad RN Residency, and will be starting a Critical Care Fellowship next week (actually Sunday night). So far, so good!

I am so inspired by your posts. I have been an accountant for 23 years and basically have just had enough. I am not fulfilled and as a previous post stated, life is short, and I want to enter a career where I can help people. It is hard work but very rewarding. I am working on my pre-requisites and hoping to apply to an accellerated BSN program in January 2011. I am nervous about getting in as I know the competition is rough as there are just not enough nurse educators to bring in bigger classes, but I am hopeful that I will be accepted. I hope that I do well and manage to get the pre-requisites done while working a crazy hr job! I wish all of you well in your journeys and hope to join the nursing profession soon.

I'm so glad to have found this forum. I felt like no one understood what I was going through until I read everyone's posts. I am 24 years old and graduated in 2008 with a BBA in accounting. After years of searching, I finally landed my first real accounting job last month. You figure I would be ecstatic, right? Well, I'm not. I have $34,000 in school loans that I've been able to start paying back and I'm making the most I've ever made so far (which really isn't much), but I want to quit already. I don't want to quit because the job is hard, but because it's boring and not at all what I thought it would be like. When I think about sitting in a cubicle in front of a computer for years on end it makes me depressed. I want to do something more rewarding. My family is very angry with me for this decision, but I plan on relocating to NYC where I'll take my prereqs in the spring of 2011 and hopefully get accepted into a nursing program in the fall. I'm very nervous since I don't have any support but I'm sure I will be a lot happier in the long run.

I am a CPA and I have been working as accountant/auditor for 12 years. I am thinking to pursue a career as nurse and then enroll CRNA school. I have accounting degree and never had any science classes. Since I was out of school about 12 years ago, would it be a problem for me when applying for Accelerated BSN program ? Also, I earned my bachelors in other country. I wondered if this would be a problem as well. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I certainly understand your questions. I was thinking of changing careers to nursing. I am an accountant with over 20 yrs experience. I looked at variuos accelerated programs in the NY area. All have prerequisites that have to be satisfied before applying to the programs. The prerequisites are a little different for each school. It is rough as I was trying to take the classes at night and make sure that I had enough to be able to apply to various programs. I got what I needed but got scared off from making the change mostly for financial reasons. I don't know if I make the right decision or not, but I just felt that I could not afford to support myself for the length of the program and pay tuition as well. Not enough cash.... I wish you all the best. It still is a dream of mine and if I don't make the big leap I will definitley keep studying in the area as I love it so much. All the best to you and if I can help further please let me know as I gathered quite a bit of info in my persuits. As far as the degree from another country, I see on most websites that there is some discussion as to how to get transripts and such so I don't think it would be an issue if they have establised procedures posted on the web. Best of luck to you!!

Thank you for the insight. I will look at the accelerated programs in NC and the pre-reqs. I assume you completed the pre-reqs while working full time. That's what I should do as well if I decide to pursue it. It's hard and scary to dump 10+ years of career to start something new. But if everything works fine at the end, this would be a rewarding and fulfilling experience. But there is also risk involved such as I heard that new nursing grads are having hard time to find jobs in hospitals nowadays, due to bad economy, even though some believe that this is only temporary. This is something to think about.

If you feel a call to nursing, give it a try. You have the advantage of

having experience in a first career. Even if the economy is doing well,

demand for RN's ebbs and flows in our area. If you feel strongly that you want to change careers, then transition by taking the courses nights.

Talk with many schools to see what program fits your needs.

Unlike accounting where it may just be you and your computer and

meeting clients, the energy is different in nursing.

You will be on your feet and surrounded by patients with many needs,

and a very interactive pace.

Its sounds like you have thought through

what part of the field interests you so contact some of the CNRA schools.

They many have some suggestions for you in order for you to reach your

goal. Best wishes!
