Career advice appreciated

Hi all,

I came to this website for some career advice. I am a newish grad who began my career as a RN on a busy cardiac stepdown unit this past June. My orientation ended on October. I already know I do not want to be here for very long and want to explore other areas of nursing. On our floor we can only take up to 4 patients, which I am very grateful. I am just not sure how much more I can take mentally. I want to shadow the OR to see if it might be a fit for me because I saw some job openings for my hospital system. I am just wondering if it is a good idea to ask my manager about it or if it’s too soon since I haven’t even been on the floor for a year.

Try to stick it out for a whole year. 1:4 is not a bad ratio, and I think you find the mental strain a little more manageable as the months go by. Any first nursing job is exhausting and strenuous, but you need to give yourself time in each position to learn and get something out of it. Unless there is something truly egregious going on, it's worth it to finish your full year.
