Career Advancement After Discipline

Published

I am anxious/curious if anyone knows if it is possible to become a CNP after BON discipline.

Long story short, I reported to the Ohio BON in 2015 after I failed a urine drug test. I am in recovery since that day. It scared me straight. I was however in a lot of denial/depressed and very avoidant of the issues in my life at that time. I thought my career was over. I didn't obtain legal counsel. I was sent a consent agreement that had permanent narcotic restrictions. Fast forward to 2017, I met with the board appointed monitor and began the process to have my RN license reinstated. I am now reinstated, still on the monitoring for the next 1.5 yrs and have a very well respected attorney. Unfortunately, she advised me that bc I signed the agreement in 2017 without counsel, I will FOREVER have the perm narc restrictions.

My kids are in high school and I want to become a nurse practitioner. I understand the narc restrictions will be a huge hurdle... but can anyone advise me if this is a possibility? I am divorced. Had my boys young. I want to continue my education. Can anyone offer any wisdom on this?

Hello!

I am in Ohio as well. My narc restrictions have been lifted but I have the black mark...

I was in NP school.. had two classes left and clinical. 3.9 gpa. OUCH.

I have sort of looked into going back while wishing I would have just left nursing all together.

The issue is the dea license of course. Seems like it will be a no go. I can't find information on how they treat a np with a history...

However, an NP can work without prescribing controlled substances correct? An NP can prescribe medications that are not controlled without a DEA number. Im sure there are many jobs where an np having to worry about controlled substances.

What I dont know is how hard it is to 1- get into school 2- get credentialed 3- find a job while not being the 'full package'

I hope someday to have confidence and pride again. ?

Wowza, I have never heard of a permanent narc restriction. Sorry that happened to you!

I am unfamiliar with what can be done, but, I hope you will be able to find a way to further your education and maybe someday, find a lawyer who can get that removed. Especially once you finish the monitoring program.

Good luck to you!

Maybe look into jobs that require an MSN or DNP that aren't clinically focused? Informatics?

I would just remind you that the education you have ALREADY received will serve you very well in many research, many Laboratory Settings not having to do with human health, and many things that do have to do with health.

Regardless, I hope your happiness and fulfillment are only temporary hindered by this seemingly “permanent” thing.

You obviously still have a lot to give, I pray you find a way to make it a win-win as I did.

I have fulfillment now that Nursing was never able to give me, but it took that path(good and bad), to get “here.”

Perhaps your path leads to a similar place if you direct it there. Never give up, or “settle,” for good enough.
